Apple’s Final Cut Camera 2.0: An Exciting Update with New Features
Apple has announced a significant update for its free video recording application, Final Cut Camera 2.0. This upgrade coincides with the release of the latest iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models, leveraging the advanced camera features introduced in Apple’s latest devices.
Enhanced Recording Capabilities
Final Cut Camera, which debuted last year, enables users to simultaneously record video streams from various angles and to wirelessly adjust camera settings for each stream. The newly launched version takes full advantage of the cutting-edge camera technologies present in the iPhone 17 lineup.
ProRes RAW Support
One of the standout features of the update is the integration of ProRes RAW. This codec, which first appeared on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, allows users to capture RAW data straight from the camera. Apple asserts that ProRes RAW offers a more efficient file size without sacrificing quality compared to other RAW formats, providing users with greater creative flexibility.
Future Enhancements for Editors
Looking ahead, Apple plans to include detailed control over ProRes RAW in upcoming releases of Final Cut Pro 11.2 and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3. These updates will enable users to make precise adjustments to exposure, color, temperature, tint, and demosaicing, enhancing the editing experience significantly.
Genlock Feature and Synchronization
Final Cut Camera 2.0 also introduces support for the innovative genlock feature found in the Pro models. This feature allows creators to synchronize video across multiple cameras, which streamlines the editing process and saves valuable time on alignment. Additionally, Apple has released a Genlock API for third-party developers, with applications already seen in tools like the Blackmagic Design Camera ProDock.
Open Gate Recording for Greater Flexibility
The update introduces open gate recording, which utilizes the full camera sensor to capture a broader field of view at resolutions that exceed DCI 4K. This capability empowers editors to reframe shots, stabilize footage, and define final aspect ratios, all while maintaining high-quality output, as noted by Apple.
New Center Stage Front Camera Feature
Another significant advancement across all iPhone 17 models is the Center Stage front camera feature. Enhanced by a new square sensor, this function provides a wider field of view and improved resolution. Users can effortlessly capture footage in both horizontal and vertical orientations without needing to adjust their iPhone. Final Cut Camera 2.0 is fully supportive of this innovative feature.
Compatibility and Upcoming Availability
The latest version of Final Cut Camera will also support the optional use of the iPhone 17 Pro’s new 200mm Telephoto camera with ProRes capabilities up to 4K60 quality, alongside support for Apple Log 2. The app gains functionality for enabling Timcodes—options include time of day, record run, or external timecode—facilitating precise identification of footage during post-production.
Apple has confirmed that Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available on the App Store later this month. Users will need an iPhone XS or later, running iOS 18.6 or above, though some features will require iOS 26 or the latest iPhone 17 Pro models.
