In a significant step towards enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple has revealed its plans to integrate a Google Gemini-based model into the redesigned Siri, addressing previous criticisms of its AI initiatives. This confirmation aligns with earlier speculation regarding the partnership and sets the stage for a more powerful Siri later this year.
Revamping Siri: Integration with Google’s Gemini Model
Back in November 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple intended to leverage a specially tailored Gemin AI model to upgrade Siri. This new model, boasting an impressive 1.2 trillion parameters, is expected to dramatically outstrip the existing 1.5 billion-parameter model currently utilized for Siri’s cloud functionality. Reports indicate that Apple may invest up to $1 billion annually in this collaborative endeavor with Google.
Features of the Upcoming Siri Upgrade
For those unfamiliar with the imminent enhancements, the updated Siri will encompass three primary components:
- Query Planner: This sophisticated decision-making layer will determine the best method to address user requests. Siri will now access options such as conducting web searches, referencing personal information (like calendar events), or interacting with third-party applications through App Intents—an essential framework that facilitates app discovery for Siri, allowing users to execute in-app actions seamlessly.
- Knowledge Search System: The new Siri will possess an extensive general knowledge database enabling it to answer questions and queries with increased independence, minimizing reliance on other AI integrations or online searches.
- Summarizer: A vital tool under the Apple Intelligence framework, this feature enables Siri to utilize third-party AI capabilities like ChatGPT for content summarization and includes functions for summarizing notifications, Safari webpages, and more.
In this revamped ecosystem, the customized Google Gemini model will specifically manage the Query Planner and Summarizer, while Apple’s own on-device LLMs (Foundation Models) will handle the Knowledge Search System.
Upcoming Apple Intelligence Features with iOS Update
Apple is also expected to roll out significant features alongside its Spring 2026 iOS update (iOS 26.4), which includes:
- In-app Actions: Users will benefit from context-driven tasks within supported applications via voice commands, such as adding items to grocery lists or sending messages.
- Personal Context Awareness: This feature will enable Siri to leverage user data for customized services, simplifying tasks like retrieving specific podcasts from messaging threads.
- On-Screen Awareness: Siri will gain the ability to comprehend on-screen content, allowing it to execute various tasks based on what is currently displayed.
In a recent statement to CNBC, Apple affirmed its collaboration with Google, emphasizing the transformative potential of integrating Gemini technology:
“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users.”
Following this, Google confirmed the collaboration, stating that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will utilize Gemini technology to enhance various features within Apple Intelligence:
Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized…

During Apple’s latest earnings call, Tim Cook reiterated that the company is poised to make “good progress”on the new iteration of Siri under the Apple Intelligence banner, with plans for a 2026 launch on schedule.
When questioned about the incorporation of additional AI models with Siri, Cook elaborated on Apple’s strategy to progressively integrate various capabilities, hinting at ongoing preparations for the Model Context Protocol (MCP).This open standard, launched by Anthropic, facilitates interoperability between AI models and diverse applications. Currently, only OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been integrated within Apple’s Siri ecosystem.
