Apple Collaborates with Anthropic and OpenAI to Enhance Siri with Advanced AI Features While Developing Its Own AI Models

Apple’s Siri has frequently come under fire for its limited capabilities compared to competing virtual assistants, particularly in areas such as contextual awareness and natural language processing. Users have expressed a strong desire for a more robust and intelligent Siri experience over the years. Despite promises from Apple Intelligence to enhance personalization and improve Siri’s AI capabilities, the assistant has struggled to keep pace with the expectations set by the modern AI landscape. Recent reports indicate that change may be on the horizon, with Apple exploring potential collaborations with OpenAI and Anthropic for integration opportunities.

Enhancing Siri with OpenAI and Anthropic

Siri’s performance has been limited in terms of handling complex, multi-step interactions, primarily due to its inflexible command structure. This hinders the assistant’s ability to respond naturally to varying phrasing, a capability that more advanced large language models (LLMs) possess. Furthermore, Siri often finds it challenging to address open-ended questions or tasks that require reasoning. Apple’s slow progress in evolving Siri and enhancing its functionalities has only magnified user frustrations. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is now contemplating a partnership with OpenAI and Anthropic to potentially incorporate their sophisticated LLMs into Siri.

The tech giant is currently assessing the AI models of both OpenAI and Anthropic, with the intention to run these models on its Private Cloud Compute servers. Although no concrete decision has been made about replacing Siri’s current technology, internal tests suggest that Anthropic’s models may be the most suitable option. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding financial terms, although Anthropic’s request for a multi-billion dollar contract indicates rising costs in the AI sector.

In light of Anthropic’s high demands, Apple may also explore different partnership avenues to find the optimal solution for integrating advanced AI capabilities to elevate Siri. The company has been developing its own LLM, yet Siri’s ongoing difficulties with AI solutions highlight the challenges it faces. Apple had previously promised enhanced features driven by Apple Intelligence, but delays have fueled skepticism about their commitment to delivering on these advancements.

In March, Apple faced significant criticism after announcing a postponement of Siri’s AI enhancements until 2026. In response to user backlash, the company revised its timeline, aiming now for a rollout of advanced features in the iOS 26 update. A partnership with either OpenAI or Anthropic could play a crucial role in not only accelerating the development of Siri’s capabilities but also fulfilling Apple’s commitment to harnessing AI technology effectively.
