In a surprising development, Tim Cook, the current CEO of Apple, has announced plans to step down by September 2026, contrary to earlier statements made by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who had suggested otherwise.
However, Cook is not completely exiting the scene; he will transition into a ceremonial and advisory role as executive chairman on Apple’s board.
A High-Stakes Transition at Apple
Reports from major publications such as Reuters and the Financial Times in November 2025 had indicated that Cook was expected to resign in 2026. After over a decade leading one of the world’s largest corporations, this transition is indeed significant.
Despite the speculation by Reuters and others, Mark Gurman remained skeptical about Cook’s imminent departure. Nonetheless, he acknowledged a key point: that John Ternus, Apple’s hardware chief, is likely to be Cook’s successor.
Recently, Apple confirmed this anticipated shift: Tim Cook will assume a more muted role as executive chairman starting September 1, 2026.
“Apple announced that Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become Apple’s next chief executive officer effective on September 1, 2026.”
The official press release from Apple further detailed the transition:
“Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition. As executive chairman, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world.”
Ternus’s elevation to CEO should not come as a shock, as Cook has been preparing him for this role over the past few years. By expanding Ternus’s responsibilities to include overseeing Apple’s design team, Cook effectively signaled his confidence in Ternus’s ability to lead.
This strategic move highlights the importance of the design team within Apple’s organizational framework, a role historically occupied by significant figures within the company.
