On Monday, Apple officially unveiled iOS 18.4 for the general public. Although this update is notable, it unfortunately does not include some of the Apple Intelligence features that were anticipated from previous announcements. As Apple gears up for the release of the iOS 18.5 beta for developers, reports indicate that the company has begun internal testing for iOS 18.6. Based on historical patterns, we can expect the developer beta to be available around May or June.
Internal Testing of iOS 18.6: What to Expect
As previously noted, iOS 18.4 is now accessible to all compatible iPhone models, enhancing user experience through various bug fixes and performance improvements. This update also introduces some enhancements related to Apple Intelligence, such as the Priority Notifications feature, which is available on select models, including the iPhone 15 Pro series, the entire iPhone 16 lineup, and the iPhone 16e.
According to MacRumors, the testing phase for iOS 18.6 is underway. The early beta release is expected to occur for developers in late spring or early summer. Currently, the specifics of what this update will entail remain unclear. Given that Apple has already rolled out most of its anticipated Apple Intelligence features and has deferred additional launches, expectations for groundbreaking new capabilities in iOS 18.6 should be tempered. Historical data shows that previous updates, such as iOS 17.6 and iOS 16.6, primarily included minor adjustments rather than major advancements.
Despite this, iOS 18.6 is anticipated to deliver essential bug fixes and performance refinements, which could significantly benefit users, particularly those with older iPhone models. These updates often prolong the usability and efficiency of existing devices. Furthermore, previous “point-six” updates have consistently focused on stability and performance rather than introducing innovative features. Thus, it is reasonable to predict that iOS 18.6 will follow this trend as well.
What’s Next for iOS Users?
In parallel, Apple is also internally testing iOS 18.5, which is set for release to developers either this week or the next. This raises the question among users: Will iOS 18 introduce any remarkable new features, or is the wait better spent anticipating iOS 19? With each new update, user expectations evolve, and it will be interesting to see how Apple navigates future enhancements.
