Apple Begins Development of Next-Gen iOS 19 and Other Updates Following VisionOS 3 Reference in Sample Project

In recent weeks, Apple’s software engineers have been hard at work developing the next iterations of their operating systems, which are set to be unveiled at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. Following the launch of iOS 18.2, which introduced significant advances in Apple Intelligence—including ChatGPT integration for Siri—the company swiftly rolled out the first developer beta for iOS 18.3. Additionally, reports indicate that work has commenced on visionOS 3, the anticipated update for the Apple Vision Pro.

Unveiling visionOS 3: Indicators of Apple’s Extensive Development Plans

Insights from industry expert Mark Gurman suggest that Apple’s gradual progression from iOS 18 to iOS 18.4 may be hindering the development timeline for iOS 19. For Apple to effectively implement compelling features across its devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac, it must accelerate the evolution of its Apple Intelligence functionalities. Presently, engineers are focused on finalizing iOS 18 projects, which poses a risk of pushing back the release of key features for iOS 19 if this pattern persists.

The early stages of visionOS 3 development is a promising sign, indicating that Apple is also gearing up for future updates like iPadOS 19, macOS 16, and watchOS 12 slated for 2025. Notably, AppleInsider discovered a mention of the unreleased visionOS 3 within the documentation for a sample project on Apple’s website. This discovery echoes a previous instance where another project alluded to the yet-to-be-released visionOS 2.4, expected in Spring 2024. These findings strongly imply that Apple is indeed making strides towards their next-generation Vision Pro updates.

Moreover, Apple’s future operating systems, including iOS 19, macOS 16, and watchOS 12, are anticipated to be highlighted during WWDC 2025. The enhancement of Apple Intelligence remains pivotal as a core attribute of these updates. The tech giant must expedite its AI development process, as delays in these features could hinder the overall launch of iOS 19.

While Apple Intelligence has not yet significantly transformed user experiences, preparations are underway for robust updates. As the WWDC approaches, more information regarding these operating systems will emerge, sparking anticipation among users. What are your expectations for the upcoming iOS 19?
