Apple Appoints Vision Pro Creator to Revamp AI Strategy and Enhance Siri Functionality Following Backlash Over Personalized Siri Delays

Apple’s recent decision to postpone the rollout of its Personalized Siri experience until next year has sparked considerable turmoil within the company. Reports suggest that CEO Tim Cook has lost confidence in AI lead John Giannandrea’s capacity to manage product development effectively. In light of this, Apple is set to reorganize its executive structure, appointing Mike Rockwell, the visionary behind the Vision Pro, to spearhead the Siri division.

Originally slated for launch with iOS 18.4, the Personalized Siri feature has faced technical hurdles, achieving only about 80% of its projected success metrics. Consequently, Cook has reevaluated the capabilities of the current Siri team, now under Giannandrea’s leadership.

Mike Rockwell, who serves as the Vice President of the Vision Products Group and is credited with the development of the Vision Pro headset, will now take charge of the Siri team. In recent days, Apple has transferred another senior manager from Rockwell’s team, Aimee Nugent, to bolster the Siri group. Nugent, known for her capacity to tackle difficult projects, will assist Rockwell in evaluating and enhancing the organization. Insiders reveal that Rockwell has not shied away from critiquing Siri and has long advocated for a more personalized overhaul of the voice assistant, offering strategic advice to the AI team in recent weeks.

Despite the Vision Pro headset’s lukewarm sales performance, Rockwell has made significant progress in its technical development. The recent integration of Apple Intelligence into the headset suggests that Rockwell’s expertise could yield substantial improvements for Siri as well. Meanwhile, Paul Meade, who previously led hardware engineering for the Vision Pro, will take over Rockwell’s team.
