Apple Advances Foldable iPhone Development with New Supplier Partnership
Apple is making significant strides toward realizing its vision of a foldable iPhone, having enlisted suppliers for ultra-thin glass. There has been considerable speculation surrounding the design of the foldable device, with some sources indicating a preference for a book-style format, while others suggest a clamshell approach could be first on the market.
New Supplier Secured for Ultra-Thin Glass
According to a recent report from The Elec, Apple has chosen Lens Technology, a prominent Chinese manufacturer, as its primary supplier for ultra-thin glass essential for the forthcoming foldable iPhone. This partnership is expected to handle up to 70 percent of Apple’s orders for this high-tech material, with Corning likely supplying the raw glass. Lens Technology’s reputation for robust mass production capabilities and substantial financial backing has positioned it as a favorable choice for Apple.
Innovations in Glass Technology
One of the key factors behind Apple’s decision to partner with Lens Technology is the company’s advanced glass-strengthening techniques, which significantly reduce the likelihood of side cracks during the cutting process. This innovation promises not only to enhance yield rates, thereby increasing profitability for the supplier, but also to improve durability for Apple’s products.
Production Timeline and Features
Looking ahead, Apple is anticipated to unveil its first foldable iPhone in the latter half of next year, coinciding with the launch of the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro models. Reports suggest that Apple intends to focus on reducing thickness in the central section of the ultra-thin glass, which is expected to improve durability while maintaining a commendable overall thickness.
Additional Supplier Collaborations
In addition to Lens Technology, Apple is also looking to collaborate with secondary suppliers, including South Korea’s Dowoo Insys and UTI, to further bolster its supply chain for ultra-thin glass. Notably, Samsung Display has been designated as the exclusive supplier for the anticipated foldable device, which is likely to adopt a design reminiscent of clamshell smartphones or similar to the Galaxy Fold series.
With credible sources suggesting a potential launch window extending either next year or possibly as late as 2027, anticipation continues to grow around the foldable iPhone. Stay tuned for updates regarding the device’s release timeline and production advancements.
