The film adaptation of Manel Loureiro’s acclaimed 2007 novel, Apocalypse Z, serves as the inaugural entry in a thrilling trilogy. This cinematic venture is produced by Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls, with Adriana Izquierdo taking the role of executive producer.
Premiere and Synopsis
The highly anticipated Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End first graced the screens at the Sitges Film Festival on October 5, 2024, before making its Amazon Prime Video debut later on October 31, 2024. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the official synopsis reads:
“A strange disease has spread across the planet, turning people into violent creatures. Manel, who lives in isolation after the death of his wife, must learn to survive in this apocalyptic landscape alongside his cat.”
In a shocking twist at the film’s conclusion, Manel makes a harrowing journey to the Canary Islands, only to find this supposed safe haven also overrun by the undead.
Manel’s Fight for Survival
The narrative follows Manel, a lawyer plunged into reclusion following the tragic loss of his wife in a vehicular accident. Isolated in his home for an entire year, he becomes oblivious to the calamitous outbreak of a lethal virus known as TSJ, which transforms individuals into ravenous zombies.
Upon learning that the virus has ravaged Europe, and after witnessing societal disintegration around him, Manel’s resolve to survive intensifies. He sets out into the chaotic streets with his pet cat, Lúculo, as his only solace. His mission: to secure essential supplies and locate other survivors amidst the chaos.
The Journey to the Canary Islands
With the Canary Islands reportedly untouched by the scourge, Manel discovers that his sister, Belén, along with her family, has fled there. This revelation fuels his desperate quest to navigate to safety.
Traveling to the Arousa Estuary, where evacuees are being transported to the islands, Manel arrives only to find that all boats have departed. Resourceful yet determined, he resorts to an inflatable dinghy to reach Pontevedra.
His journey takes an unexpected turn when he meets a sailing crew led by Ushakov. Quick to bond with his fellow Spaniard, Viktor Pritchenko, Manel soon grows wary of Ushakov’s intentions, prompting a daring escape in a motorboat. Unfortunately, Ushakov’s crew confronts them, leading to Viktor’s injury during the skirmish.
A Desperate Race Against Time
In a race against time, Manel rushes the wounded Viktor to a hospital in Pontevedra, hoping to find a helicopter for evacuation. Upon arrival, they are met with grim news—the hospital is overrun with infected individuals, with Lucia, a nurse, and Sister Cecilia their only allies.
After Viktor receives urgent medical treatment, the group manages to escape in a helicopter just as Ushakov’s men breach the hospital. Tragically, they leave Sister Cecilia behind when she is attacked by a zombie during their chaotic exit.
As they head for the Canary Islands, Manel attempts to contact his sister Belén, only to learn that the islands too have succumbed to the infection. In the heart-wrenching finale, Manel grapples with despair over the loss of his last hope for survival and fear for his sister’s safety.
