Apex Legends Discontinues Linux Support: What You Need to Know

Recently, an announcement from the official Apex Legends account on X revealed that Respawn Entertainment and EA have made the decision to discontinue support for the game on the Linux operating system. This shift will impact not just players using PCs with Linux, but also those who utilize Linux through platforms like Steam Deck to engage with the game.

This article aims to explore the underlying reasons for the cessation of Apex Legends support for Linux.

What Led to the Termination of Linux Support for Apex Legends?

According to the official statement, the developers of Apex Legends have pinpointed the Linux OS as a primary avenue for cheaters and hackers to exploit the game mechanics. The inherent “openness of Linux”presents an opportunity for these individuals to create cheats that circumvent anti-cheat systems, including EA’s own Easy Anti-Cheat.

Here’s a snippet from the developer’s blog that addresses this issue:

“To address this cheating vulnerability, we’ve decided to restrict access to the game for Linux users. Consequently, Apex Legends will be inaccessible for anyone utilizing this operating system. However, players using devices like the Steam Deck can still enjoy the game by installing Windows.”

Detecting and catching those who create cheats on the Linux platform proves to be a challenging ordeal. The statement highlights a surge in cheating activities from this platform, prompting the development team to block its access to safeguard the game’s integrity.

This alteration will also considerably affect those playing Apex Legends on the Steam Deck via Linux. While it may pose a setback for a minority of the player community, the developers affirm that this action will “significantly decrease cheating occurrences within our game.”

As of now, these modifications are in effect, meaning that individuals who were playing the game on Linux OS have lost access. Users on Steam or other sanctioned platforms will not be impacted. Additionally, Steam Deck players wishing to continue their gameplay should consider installing Windows OS on their devices.
