When real-life friends share the screen as a couple in a beloved romantic comedy, it can be a thrilling experience for fans. This sentiment rings true for enthusiasts of the film Anyone But You.
Starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, this modern adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing made waves at its release in late 2023. Their off-screen camaraderie fueled a flurry of speculation, playful banter, and engaging promotional events around the film. Recently, both actors were seen together at the wedding of Powell’s sister, musician Leslie Powell, sparking further excitement among their fanbase.
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, it was clarified that Sweeney attended the wedding merely as a friend of the bride, and she even brought a girlfriend along as her date.“There is absolutely nothing romantic happening between Glen and Sydney; they are just friends, ”an insider explained to the publication, adding that the RSVP had been arranged months in advance.
While some fans hoped for a real-life romance between the two, many were equally thrilled to see their favorites together, reminiscent of iconic on-screen couples like Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Though reactions ranged from amazed to curiosity about their friendship, the buzz quickly shifted back to Anyone But You, reaffirming its prominence in cinematic discussions.

Can We Have More Contemporary Adaptations of Shakespeare, Please?
Growing up, many millennials were exposed to a variety of clever adaptations of classic literature. Iconic films like Clueless, based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and 10 Things I Hate About You, inspired by The Taming of the Shrew, brought timeless stories to new audiences. Disney’s innovative interpretations of Hamlet in The Lion King also captured imaginations.
However, it seems that the trend of modernizing Shakespeare has ebbed in recent years, despite the wealth of plays offering rich material for adaptation. The arrival of Anyone But You, a creative retelling of Much Ado About Nothing, reignited hopes for more such projects. Many fans, myself included, eagerly anticipated its release and rushed to theaters to experience the film.
We crave that nostalgic blend of classic storytelling with contemporary relevance. The charm of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney in this modern romantic comedy echoes the golden age of 90s and early 2000s films, and it leaves audiences longing for a revival of similar adaptations.
As the enthusiasm surrounding these actors continues, I can’t help but hope that they will channel their combined star power to create even more adaptations of Shakespeare. Beyond rom-coms, I’m dreaming of presenting my unique take on Macbeth!
For those wishing for a romantic connection between the two, I’ll remind you to revisit Anyone But You and perhaps embrace the spirit of the moment by belting out Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” at the next wedding you attend—just like I did this past weekend!
