Anthropic’s Claude AI Models Launch on Azure Following $5 Billion Microsoft Investment

Microsoft Expands Partnership with Anthropic Ahead of Ignite 2025

In a surprising move ahead of the Ignite 2025 keynote event, Microsoft has announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Anthropic, an innovative AI startup and competitor to OpenAI. This partnership includes a substantial investment, with Microsoft committing up to $5 billion to support Anthropic’s AI initiatives, alongside delivering their models through the Azure cloud platform.

Integration of Claude Models in Azure

Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced Anthropic’s Claude models as an alternative option within Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio, effectively competing with OpenAI’s offerings. However, at that time, the APIs for the Claude models were exclusively associated with AWS and Google Cloud services.

With this newly expanded partnership, Anthropic’s Claude AI model will now be accessible on Azure, leveraging the computational power of NVIDIA’s GPUs. Microsoft asserts that this integration provides Azure enterprise clients with a broader selection of AI models, enhancing their technological capabilities.

Investment in Azure Compute Capacity

As part of the agreement, Anthropic has committed to procuring $30 billion worth of Azure compute capacity while also agreeing to additional contracts for up to one gigawatt of compute power, utilizing NVIDIA’s Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems.

The Role of NVIDIA in the Partnership

NVIDIA is a central figure in the Microsoft-Anthropic collaboration. Previously, Anthropic’s AI models primarily relied on Amazon’s proprietary AI accelerators and Google Cloud’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).The partnership is aimed at optimizing Anthropic’s models to achieve enhanced performance, efficiency, and total cost of ownership (TCO) on upcoming NVIDIA architectures.

Claude Model’s Availability Across Cloud Platforms

Through this partnership, Anthropic announced that its Claude models will be the only frontier AI models available across all three major public cloud providers. Microsoft and NVIDIA plan to collectively invest as much as $5 billion into Anthropic as part of this initiative.
