Anthony Mackie: A New Era for Captain America
Captain America: Brave New World marks a significant transformation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Anthony Mackie steps into the role of Captain America, succeeding his friend and former co-star Chris Evans. Mackie, who debuted as Sam Wilson—originally known as the Falcon—in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has been a pivotal figure in the MCU. His character’s evolution culminated in the passing of the iconic shield during Avengers: Endgame, leading to his full embrace of the Captain America title in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
A Personal Journey to Inherit the Shield
Interestingly, Mackie’s transition to the role of Captain America is steeped in personal significance, particularly with respect to how he learned about this pivotal change from Evans himself. In a recent interview with Fandango as part of their Big Ticket interview series, Mackie recounted the unforgettable moment when Evans shared the news that would change his career.
“I found out from him, and it was just us like jumping around in a circle high-fiving like two 12-year-olds that just met Mickey Mouse.”
“We were shooting in Atlanta at his amazing house—just hanging out, watching a game and chatting. Then he asked, ‘Have you read the new script?’ I said, ‘Nah.’ He was like, ‘You don’t know?’ And being black, I thought, ‘Man, they’re going to kill me off. I don’t even cause trouble; I’m just in the background.’
“So he brings me down to his ‘man cave’—this incredible basement filled with Marvel memorabilia—and shows me the script. I was nervous, thinking they’d killed off my character. But when I read the final scenes, I saw the line, ‘He hands him the shield.’ I asked, ‘Why did you give me the shield?’ He replied, ‘Because you’re f**king Captain America.’ We hugged and jumped up and down—it was hilarious.”
The Legacy Continues
Mackie’s journey to becoming Captain America is not only a reflection of his immense talent but also symbolizes a broader evolution within the Marvel franchise. As the MCU continually redefines its characters for new generations, Mackie’s transition reinforces the narrative that embodies hope, resilience, and growth. The upcoming Brave New World will undoubtedly further explore this legacy, adding depth to both Mackie’s portrayal and the future of the iconic hero in the Marvel universe.
