  • Many viewers found Sam Wilson’s cowl impractical for live-action adaptation.

Anthony Mackie is set to take the lead in the eagerly anticipated Captain America: Brave New World. However, he has made it clear that he will not be donning one of the most recognizable elements of Captain America’s costume in this installment.

The film, marking the first Captain America entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe without Chris Evans, is set to be released soon. As part of the promotional efforts, Mackie has been participating in various interviews, discussing key aspects of his role, including the absence of a specific item from his costume that he previously wore.

During an interview with IGN, Mackie discussed his decision regarding the cowl for his Captain America outfit. When asked why the “white half helmet”was omitted, Mackie candidly shared that he himself requested its removal. He remarked, “Because I told them that I was never wearing that s**t again, dude. It was hard – with the heat, the sweat, the fogged-up glasses. It was impossible. It was called a cowl… it was my worst nightmare.”He passionately elaborated that while wearing it, “you can’t do anything.

Mackie debuted his partial cowl in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, specifically in Episode 6, titled “One World, One People.”In this series, he showcased a costume that paid homage to the source material, which included a white and blue ensemble. The white cowl, adorned with blue accents, covered the sides of his head while leaving his face and ears exposed. Audience reception was mixed; some found it bulky and cumbersome in a live-action setting compared to the more practical, streamlined helmet worn by Steve Rogers. Others appreciated the faithful adaptation from the comics and valued the inclusion of goggles connecting to his past as Falcon.

Adhering to comic book fidelity is vital for many fans, particularly those who wish to see beloved characters represented accurately on screen. However, the necessity of the cowl has come into question, as its absence may ultimately enhance both Mackie’s performance and audience enjoyment. If viewers don’t grasp the rationale behind his decision to wear the cowl, it could detract from their experience. Traditionally, Captain America’s cowl is characterized by a close fit, a prominent “A”on the forehead, and wing motifs on the sides—elements that have been updated in the MCU for a more helmet-like form that includes additional protection for the character.

Mackie’s rendition of Sam Wilson does not require the additional headgear due to his advanced EXO-7 Falcon wingsuit, which provides remarkable speed, agility, and maneuverability. This technological suit enables him to perform complex aerial maneuvers and rapid strikes. More importantly, understanding an actor’s comfort with their costume during intense action sequences is critical. Mackie’s determination to eliminate unnecessary costume elements is commendable as it can significantly affect the filming process, particularly in superhero films where bulky outfits prevail. Despite the absence of a cowl, expectations remain high for Mackie’s portrayal, despite rumors regarding reshoots stemming from negative test screenings.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to premiere on February 14, 2025.
