  • Despite receiving mixed reviews, the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse outperformed others at the box office.

The much-anticipated Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has recently enriched its cast with the addition of Stranger Things actor Matthew Modine. This entry into Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse is shaping up to feature a robust lineup alongside the iconic titans, Godzilla and King Kong.

Since its inception with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014, the MonsterVerse has expanded significantly, now encompassing five feature films and two television series over the course of a decade. Its latest film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, while being one of the lower-rated movies in the franchise, remarkably achieved the status of the highest-grossing installment, amassing $571.9 million globally. The sequel is now officially progressing and bringing together a combination of veterans and newcomers to join in this cinematic clash.

Matthew Modine Joins the MonsterVerse

According to Deadline, Matthew Modine has finalized his agreement with Legendary Pictures to appear in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong film. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Modine will portray a military general in the film. He is particularly recognized by younger audiences for his portrayal of Dr. Martin Brenner in Stranger Things, where he played a villainous government scientist conducting dubious experiments on children with special abilities, including the character Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown. Furthermore, Modine’s extensive career features iconic performances in classics such as Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, Robert Altman’s Short Cuts, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and Oppenheimer.

New Additions to the Godzilla vs. Kong Cast

Modine is not the first actor from Stranger Things to join the MonsterVerse, as Millie Bobby Brown previously appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters as Madison Russell, the daughter of Dr. Mark Russell and Dr. Emma Russell. Brown reprised her role in Godzilla vs. Kong. Presently, the upcoming film features a slew of new actors including Kaitlyn Dever from The Last of Us Season 2, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo, while Dan Stevens is the only familiar face returning from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

While the MonsterVerse is often criticized for its underdeveloped human characters, the performances of its cast members have generally been commendable. Some fans argue that future installments should focus purely on the kaiju and minimize human involvement. Nevertheless, with Modine’s addition, the film is likely to benefit from his proven experience and star power.

The release date for the next Godzilla vs. Kong sequel is slated for March 26, 2027, promising an exciting continuation of the epic monster saga.
