Anno 117’s Advanced Modular Ship Building System Unveiled with Extensive Customization Options

Exciting Innovations Ahead in Anno 117: Pax Romana

The upcoming game Anno 117: Pax Romana is set to revolutionize the series with its introduction of innovative mechanics, including the ability to construct diagonal roads and buildings. This installment is particularly focused on maritime trade, enhancing the shipbuilding elements that have been a staple in the franchise since its launch in 1998.

Introducing Modular Ships

Building upon the successful item system from Anno 1800, players will now have the capability to create ships tailored for specific tasks using customizable parts.Markus, one of the game designers, noted,

“The idea of introducing modular ships to the Anno was going around already for a while. With the Roman setting we had the perfect platform to do it, since it is very true to how the Romans themselves built their ships.”

Shipyard Sizes and Modifications

In Anno 117, players will encounter three distinct sizes of Roman ships available for construction:

  • Penteconter: Offers 2 modification slots.
  • Trireme: Provides 3 modification slots.
  • Quinquireme: Features 4 modification slots.

Before the construction begins, players can select from a variety of modules to fill these slots, provided they have the necessary resources and stay within operational limits. Some of the available modules include:

  • Mast: Increases speed when sailing with the wind, optimizing max speed and inter-regional travel.
  • Rows: Enhances speed and acceleration with a smaller turning radius—ideal for short-range journeys and combat scenarios.
  • Reinforced Hull: Adds extra hit points (HP) for durability.
  • Archer Tower: Fires multiple arrows at nearby targets.
  • Scorpio: Delivers high-damage precision spears from the sides at mid-range.
  • Onager: Fires high-damage rocks from the front, though with reduced accuracy.

Cost Management and Cargo Capacity

Ubisoft points out that the construction and maintenance costs for ships will vary depending on the modules selected. For instance, utilizing oars will demand more manpower compared to sails, influencing workforce requirements. Similarly, the installation of an Archer Tower will require more soldiers than that of an Onager, given the differing operational needs.

It’s essential to note that while adding modifications reduces a ship’s cargo-holding capacity, there will always be some available space for materials. Players can also save their shipbuilding designs for future endeavors, creating a more strategic gameplay experience.
