Google Unveils First Developer Preview of Android 16

Google has commenced the rollout of the first Developer Preview for its upcoming Android 16, targeting eligible Pixel devices. This early-stage deployment aligns with Google’s roadmap, aiming for a stable release by the second quarter of 2025. This follows the recent launch of the Android 15 stable update, which, despite high expectations, did not include several anticipated features.

Introduction of the “Notification Cooldown”Feature

Among the eagerly anticipated features is the “Notification Cooldown”functionality. Originally introduced in the Developer Preview 1 of Android 15, this feature has resurfaced in the latest Android 16 Developer Preview 1, drawing attention from Android expert Mishaal Rahman, who shared insights via Android Authority.

Changes to Notification Cooldown Functionality

The latest update has brought some modifications to how users can utilize the “Notification Cooldown”feature. In its initial debut during Android 15’s DP1, users could configure the cooldown for all notifications or limit it to specific chat or messaging apps. However, the current version simplifies this process, allowing users to either enable or disable the feature without the previous granularity.

How to Access and Use Notification Cooldown

Users can activate the “Notification Cooldown”feature by navigating to Settings > Notifications > Notification Cooldown on their Pixel devices. The feature works as follows:

When multiple notifications are received in rapid succession, the device will automatically lower its volume and minimize alerts for a duration of up to 2 minutes. Notably, calls, alarms, and priority conversations will remain unaffected.

Notifications that occur during this cooldown period can be accessed by pulling down the notification shade from the top of the screen.

Benefits of the Notification Cooldown Feature

With this feature activated, users will experience a gradual decrease in the volume of consecutive notifications from the same app. This can be particularly beneficial in high-alert scenarios, such as receiving a constant stream of messages from a group chat on WhatsApp. It’s worth mentioning that the notification volume reduction will last no longer than 2 minutes, ensuring that important calls and alarms remain audible.

What to Expect from Android 16 (“Baklava”)

As Google continues to refine Android 16, also referred to as “Baklava,”additional features are anticipated. Reports suggest that the update may include an option for users to select input devices for recording, enhancing usability and functionality.
