Android 15 Development Complete: Google’s Source Code Release

Google has officially completed its work on Android 15 and has released the source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). While this release is significant, it may not mean much for the average end user, as updates for smartphones will not be rolled out immediately. Now that the source code is available, developers working on custom ROMs can begin developing new updates.

As highlighted in the Android Developers Blog, Android 15 is set to be available for supported Pixel devices within the next few weeks. Additionally, in the upcoming months, select devices from brands such as Samsung, Honor, IQQQ, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi will also receive the update. It’s expected that new high-end models will be prioritized for this update.

Below is a list of exciting new features introduced in Android 15, as outlined in the announcement:

• Enhanced text display for various languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
• Support for historical Japanese writing styles, facilitating the display of ancient documents
• Improved control over screen brightness when viewing both standard and high-quality (HDR) content
• More intelligent audio volume adjustments based on the surrounding environment and device
• Better performance of the camera in low light settings
• More accurate control over camera flash intensity
• Upgraded music creation applications with enhanced connectivity between virtual instruments
• Ability to save and access favorite app combinations for split-screen usage
• Taskbar pinning option for smoother app transitions on larger screens
• Enhanced support for Braille displays, making Android more user-friendly
• Simplified tap-to-pay operations with NFC-enabled applications
• Support for smaller cover screens on foldable devices
• Expanded customization capabilities for the Do Not Disturb mode
• App archiving feature designed to conserve storage while retaining user data
• Modifications to background app processes to boost battery performance and efficiency
• Introduction of a “Private Space”feature to obscure sensitive applications
• Streamlined sign-in process utilizing passkeys, an alternative to traditional passwords
• Capability for apps to identify if audio or video recording is taking place
• Strengthened security protocols to block unauthorized app launches

The Pixel smartphones eligible for the upcoming update in the next few weeks include the Pixel 6 series and newer models, including the Pixel 6a and higher.
