American Psycho Author Denies New Reboot Movie Starring Austin Butler Is Valid, Calls It “Fake News”

Bret Easton Ellis Addresses American Psycho Reboot Speculation

Renowned author Bret Easton Ellis has publicly refuted claims regarding the existence of a reboot of American Psycho by Lionsgate. He interprets the recent buzz surrounding the project as a tactic to measure public interest rather than a legitimate film production.

Original Film Overview

The original American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron, is a darkly comedic psychological thriller adapted from Ellis’ 1991 novel. Released in 2000, the film features Christian Bale in the role of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investment banker leading a double life as a serial killer. The cast also includes notable talents such as Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe, and Jared Leto.

Podcast Insights on Project Rumors

In a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Ellis strongly denied rumors of the reboot. He indicated that to his knowledge, no contracts have been finalized with either Austin Butler, who has been rumored to play Bateman, or director Luca Guadagnino:

I have a feeling it’s fake news. I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either. From various sources that I have, this is just fake news that was put out there to see how an audience is going to react.

Ellis’ Disconnection from the Project

Furthermore, Ellis clarified his position regarding the alleged reboot:

If it does exist, I am not involved, I have nothing to do with this, I might get some money if they do this, but I am not involved creatively on any level, and that is all I know.

Ongoing Developments

As the situation continues to unfold, fans of the original film and novel are left in suspense. Whether or not Lionsgate intends to move forward with a reboot remains uncertain, but this speculation certainly emphasizes the ongoing interest in classic narratives.
