AMD’s forthcoming generation of graphics processing units (GPUs) is poised for significant advancements with the introduction of the GFX13 architecture, a codename that hints at groundbreaking innovations.
Leaked Insights: AMD’s UDNA Architecture and the Introduction of “Wavegroup”
Recent leaks provide intriguing insights into AMD’s plans for its next-gen GPU architecture, although the firm has yet to officially announce its name. Speculation suggests a shift from the established RDNA framework to a new Unified GPU architecture (UDNA).Evidence of this development has emerged from a kernel-level codebase, identifying the architecture as “GFX13.”
According to the well-known leaker @Kepler_L2, GFX13 appears to signify either UDNA or RDNA 5, suggesting that the final naming has not yet been determined. Anticipated among the new features is the “Wavegroup, ”which potentially relates to managing multiple wavefronts—groups comprised of 32 or 64 threads, enhancing performance and efficiency.

While it may still be premature to explore the details surrounding UDNA, there’s significant speculation that it represents the imminent GPU architecture for a range of products, including both discrete GPUs and next-generation CPUs. Notably, AMD’s current RDNA 4 architecture has been limited to discrete implementations, leaving room for the anticipated capabilities of UDNA.
Rumors suggest that both the upcoming Zen 6 CPUs and the UDNA GPUs will utilize TSMC’s advanced N3E process node. However, confirmation of UDNA-integrated iGPUs for the Zen 6 lineup is not yet available. Anticipation remains high, with expectations that the majority of the Zen 6 series will adopt the RDNA 3.5 architecture, which has already been deployed in the Strix Point, Strix Halo, and Krackan Point silicon products.

UDNA-based products are projected to aim at high-end market segments that were previously overlooked within the current RDNA 4 lineup. While comprehensive details remain scarce, it is suggested that mass production of UDNA GPUs could commence by the second quarter of 2026.
In the interim, AMD is expected to continue expanding its RDNA 4 GPU offerings, particularly with the upcoming RX 9000 series. Following the launch of two GPUs, the RX 9060 XT is anticipated to make its debut at the upcoming Computex event.
