AMD Witnesses Tightening CPU Supply Amid Rising Demand
The dynamics between CPUs and GPUs in AI compute workloads have shifted significantly in recent months. With the introduction of more advanced agentic applications, CPUs are now playing a crucial role. During the Morgan Stanley Conference, Lisa Su articulated that the rise in server CPU demand has surpassed the company’s anticipations and is expected to continue its upward trajectory.
We’re seeing actually, as much as, you know, I’m very, very excited about the GPU portion of the business, I mean, the CPU portion of the business has actually far exceeded my expectations in terms of demand. I was pretty bullish to begin with, right?

When discussing AMD’s ability to meet this burgeoning enterprise demand, Su acknowledged the presence of “supply tightness.”This situation arises from a sudden spike in customer commitment over the past few quarters, which has left the supply chain scrambling to adjust. However, Su expressed confidence in AMD’s strategy, noting that the company is actively collaborating with partners to alleviate existing bottlenecks. Moreover, she projected that operational capacity would expand significantly in the coming year, ensuring that their product offerings are well-equipped to handle the demands of training, inference, and agentic applications.

This situation is reflective of a broader trend within the industry, as several CPU manufacturers—including Intel—have similarly reported challenges in fulfilling demand. Intel acknowledged its inability to meet commitments to hyperscalers due to insufficient production capacity. Concurrently, NVIDIA is making strides by forming exclusive CPU commitments with infrastructure partners, thereby highlighting the increasing significance of server CPUs in supporting AI workloads.
