AMD Secures Significant U.S. Government AI Contract for Next-Generation Supercomputers with Instinct MI355X and Latest MI430 AI Chips

The U. S.Department of Energy (DoE) has recently partnered with AMD to develop two advanced supercomputer projects. These initiatives aim to harness AMD’s cutting-edge AI chips to tackle critical scientific issues.

AMD Partners with U. S.DoE for Groundbreaking Supercomputers

According to a new report from Reuters, this substantial collaboration signifies a pivotal moment for AMD as it seeks wider adoption of its technology within the industry, thereby intensifying competition with NVIDIA. The supercomputers are set to leverage AMD’s innovative Instinct MI355X AI chips, along with a newly developed MI430 variant, which will be detailed later.

The first supercomputer, named “Lux, ”is projected to be operational within six months and will utilize the MI355X AI chips. This project involves collaboration with established partners, including HP, Oracle, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, has highlighted the rapid deployment of Lux as a significant achievement in the field.

The second system, referred to as “Discovery, ”is anticipated to be delivered by 2028. This supercomputer will feature a tailor-made Instinct MI430 AI chip variant optimized for high-performance computing. Notably, the planning for Project Discovery has been in discussion by the DoE since last year, and AMD has emerged as the preferred choice for the primary computing provider.

With nearly $1 billion allocated by the DoE for these projects, there is an ongoing effort to establish additional private partnerships to enhance the computing capabilities of the division. While the report does not specify why AMD was selected over NVIDIA for this collaboration, it is plausible that the DoE’s prior experience with AMD’s technology in high-performance computing influenced this decision, as evidenced by the successful use of the Frontier supercomputer.

The DoE seems to be broadening its collaboration with the public sector, indicating the potential for NVIDIA’s AI hardware to be integrated in future projects. However, for the time being, AMD appears to be the preferred partner for these significant advancements.
