According to a recent filing with the SEC, AMD has revealed a previously undisclosed Instinct MI388X AI accelerator, indicating that the company may have additional plans for this product line.
Rumors of AMD’s Upcoming HBM3e-Powered Instinct MI388X AI Accelerator for CDNA 3 GPUs
According to Tom’s Hardware, a new AMD AI accelerator has been discovered in the latest 10k filing submitted to the SEC. This report, which is required by publicly traded companies, discloses financial information and future plans. The presence of this unannounced product suggests that AMD is developing another AI accelerator, potentially one that will be the fastest yet.
AMD has made it clear that the products mentioned in the filing are not intended for export to China due to US regulations. As a result, the MI388X, which is considered a “Chinese-compliant”variant, is not included in the equation. The filing also acknowledges the presence of AMD’s Instinct MI250, MI300X, and MI300A AI GPUs, indicating that their current accelerator portfolio is limited to these models.
In October 2023, BIS [U.S. govt. Bureau of Industry and Security] issued new requirements for certain advanced computing items that apply to the export of products classified ECCN 3A090 or 4A090 to a party headquartered in, or with an ultimate parent headquartered in, any of Country Groups D1, D4 or D5, including China,”he statement from AMD reads.
“These controls prevent us from shipping our AMD Instinct MI250, MI300X, MI300A, MI388X integrated circuits and our Versal VC2802, VE2802 FPGAs to China, or to customers outside of the United States whose ultimate parent is headquartered in a D5 country (including China), without a license.
– AMD’s 10k regulatory filing via SEC
It is our initial encounter with the Instinct MI388X, so we do not have any information regarding its specifications. However, based on the naming convention, we can anticipate the MI388X to be the highest-end option. It could possibly be the final release from AMD before the transition to the new MI400 series in 2025. AMD has suggested that the updated MI300 accelerators will have increased HBM capacities and may utilize faster HBM3e dies.
Alternatively, it is possible that the product is still in the planning stages and may not be released, similar to the case of AMD’s Instinct MI309 AI GPU which was designed for the Chinese markets but was unable to be released due to US regulations.
