Recently, a troubling report surfaced on Reddit regarding yet another failure of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D CPU, specifically linked to the ASRock X870 Pro RS motherboard.

Unfortunate Demise of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D After Just Weeks of Use

This incident marks the third documented failure of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, first brought to light by a Reddit user who reported one of the initial instances. While both failures resulted in the CPUs no longer functioning, the nature and extent of the damage vary significantly.

In a prior incident, the CPU exhibited no external damage, whereas this recent failure involved dramatic overheating that led to an actual explosion. Remarkably, both CPUs were installed on the same motherboard model, the ASRock X870 PRO RS, raising concerns as most reported instances of X3D CPU failures have been associated with ASRock boards.

The affected user shared that their system was just three weeks old and that they purchased the CPU from Micro Center. Although the system showed no unusual behavior, the CPU temperatures were higher than expected, ranging between 50-58 degrees Celsius, even with a quality AIO cooler. Initially, the setup performed well under light loads and gaming tasks, but the user decided to push the system with heavier workloads to assess stability.

After a few hours of heavy usage, the system unexpectedly powered down and failed to boot, even after disconnecting the GPU. Upon inspecting the CPU, the user discovered a bulge that indicated the 9950X3D had indeed failed. Interestingly, while the motherboard’s pins remained intact, signs of discoloration appeared, suggesting potential damage from excessive voltage or heat.

This scenario echoes a previous case in which ASRock claimed their motherboard was functioning properly, asserting that debris was the cause of CPU failure instead. However, such recurrent issues indicate a potential flaw in the voltage management and supply to CPUs on ASRock motherboards, especially within the 800 series.

It is worth noting that similar failures have also been reported on motherboards from other manufacturers, yet ASRock remains at the forefront of these incidents, as evidenced by the majority of over 100 related cases. With new reports emerging consistently, one has to wonder why a comprehensive investigation into this issue has yet to be initiated.
