Details surrounding the Ryzen 8000HX series, informally referred to as Dragon Range Refresh CPUs, remain scarce. AMD has not officially announced this series, with much of the available information stemming from minor leaks and speculative reports. However, recent leaks have confirmed the series’ existence, with the Ryzen 9 8940HX being a focal point in these discussions.

The Ryzen 9 8940HX is designed to succeed the Ryzen 9 7940HX, both based on AMD’s advanced Zen 4 architecture. While the new 8940HX retains the same core structure as its predecessor, data from an infographic reveals a 100MHz increase in boost clock speed compared to the 7940HX. Although significant, further specifications and details are still pending from AMD.

The forthcoming Ryzen 9 8940HX will boast 16 cores and a 32-thread configuration, with a boost clock potentially reaching up to 5.3 GHz. It includes a total cache of 80 MB, comprised mainly of 64 MB of L3 cache inherited from the previous generation. Another leak has associated the 8940HX with an ASUS ROG laptop slated for release in 2025, which is currently listed by a Chinese vendor at 13, 999 Yuan (approximately $1907).This model also pairs the Ryzen 9 8940HX with a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.

This leak acts as further confirmation of the Dragon Range Refresh series, with expectations for a potential launch occurring in the next few weeks. Regarding graphics performance, while the Ryzen 8000HX series may not match the capabilities of Strix Halo, it is still equipped with integrated graphics suitable for basic computing tasks, aiming primarily at CPU-intensive applications.

Forecasts suggest that the integrated graphics will maintain the RDNA 2 architecture with two GPU cores, mirroring the previous series’ configuration. The Dragon Range Refresh is anticipated to be a solid, if not extraordinary, upgrade from the Dragon Range series itself. If competitively priced, it could offer substantial value, particularly when combined with the upcoming RTX 50 series graphics cards.
