AMD is gearing up to unveil its next-generation RDNA 4 flagship graphics card, rumored to be named the Radeon RX 9070 XT. This development comes as the company adopts new branding conventions for its GPUs, as reported by Chiphell forum’s senior member, Napoleon.
AMD Introduces Radeon RX 9000 Branding with RDNA 4 Series
As excitement builds for the upcoming CES 2025 event, industry rumors about AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU line are intensifying. Originally expected to be labeled under the Radeon RX 8000 series, recent reports suggest a shift to the Radeon RX 9000 branding for this latest generation set to launch in early 2025.
According to Napoleon’s insights, there will be a notable change in AMD’s naming convention. Instead of following the traditional XX00 pattern, the new GPUs will adopt an X0X0 scheme. For instance, successors to the Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT are predicted to appear as the RX 9070 XT and RX 9080 XT, respectively. This fresh approach to naming could not only better align with industry trends but also enhance brand identity.
Interestingly, AMD’s new naming strategy appears to mirror that of NVIDIA’s GeForce lineup, notably the RTX 4070 and the anticipated RTX 5070. This branding shift has been seen in various AMD products, including previous iterations of the Ryzen family, where AMD opted for a higher numbering scheme in response to its competitors. Such a tactic can provide a competitive edge in marketing and consumer perception.
Moreover, the Radeon RX 9070 XT aligns with AMD’s Strix Halo integrated GPU branding that extends up to the Radeon RX 8060S. As the Radeon 80X0 series is built on RDNA 3.5 architecture, it is logical for AMD to transition to the 90X0 designation for the new RDNA 4 generation.
Performance Expectations and Market Positioning
In addition to the new branding, rumors suggest that the anticipated AMD Navi 48 GPU will compete closely with NVIDIA’s RTX 4080 in terms of raster performance, boasting a reported 45% improvement in ray tracing performance compared to the previous Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Positioned in a mainstream market segment, the Navi 48 is expected to retail around $500, placing it in direct competition with the forthcoming RTX 5070.
