AMD Radeon RX 9070 & RX 9060 “RDNA 4” Graphics Cards Launch: 4nm Process, Next-Gen AI, Ray Tracing, Enhanced Display Engines, ML-Powered FSR 4 to Compete with 4070 & 4060 Series

AMD has officially unveiled its latest RDNA 4 GPUs, with the introduction of the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9060 series. These new graphics cards feature enhanced capabilities, including ML-boosted support for FSR 4 technology, aimed at enhancing performance and visual fidelity in gaming.

AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs and FSR 4 Technology: A New Era of Competition

Following more than a year since the launch of the Radeon RX 7000 series built on RDNA 3, AMD is now shifting its focus with the RDNA 4 lineup. This new series aims to compete directly with mainstream offerings from competitors such as NVIDIA and Intel, rather than targeting the ultra-enthusiast market segment.

Introducing the AMD RDNA 4 Architecture

The RDNA 4 architecture represents a significant advancement, featuring several key enhancements. These include:

  • Optimized Compute Units
  • Supercharged AI Compute capabilities
  • Improved Ray Tracing performance per compute unit
  • Higher quality Media Encoding

These features are facilitated by the integration of advanced technologies such as the 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, 3rd Gen Raytracing Accelerators, and the 2nd Gen AMD Radiance Display Engine. Moreover, the RDNA 4 GPUs will utilize a 4nm process node, marking an improvement over the 5nm and 6nm technologies used previously in the RDNA 3 chips. Notably, this generation also abandons the Multi-Chip Module (MCM) design in favor of a unified monolithic die architecture.

Release Timeline for the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9060 Series

The initial product offerings will include the Radeon RX 9070 XT and the Radeon RX 9070, both set to launch in Q1 2025. These graphics cards boast up to 16 GB of video memory, with the RX 9070 XT taking on competitors like the RTX 4070 Ti, while the RX 9070 is geared toward the RTX 4070. The RX 9060 series will challenge the RTX 4060 series, rounding out AMD’s competitive lineup.

Consumers can expect to see both reference and non-reference designs from a variety of well-known AIB partners including ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, PowerColor, XFX, ACER, Sapphire, Yeston, and Vastarmor.

FSR 4: AMD’s Latest AI-Driven Solution

A standout feature of the RDNA 4 architecture is its support for FSR 4, which incorporates advanced upscaling technology. Designed exclusively for RDNA 4 GPUs, FSR 4 ensures compatibility with NVIDIA’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS technologies by utilizing dedicated AI accelerators to enhance graphics performance. This technology promises outstanding quality in 4K upscaling, supplemented by the innovative Frame-Gen feature, and reduced latency through the Anti-Lag 2 technology.

Notably, FSR 4 will be supported in all games that already utilize FSR 3.1, including the highly anticipated title Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, alongside a variety of other AAA games. Thus, gamers with the new Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9060 series can readily access this advanced upscaling technology.

Introducing Adrenalin AI: A Comprehensive AI Toolset

Alongside its new GPUs, AMD is launching the Adrenalin AI utility within its software suite. This innovative tool offers features such as image generation, document summarization, and answers to AMD-related queries, paralleling options from NVIDIA’s ChatRTX and Intel’s AI Playground. While AMD has previously integrated AI features through the AMUSE utility, the Adrenalin AI will provided a more tailored and localized AI experience for users of the Adrenalin software suite.
