The recently unveiled Radeon RX 9070 GRE, tailored specifically for the Chinese market, has been subject to scrutiny by various review platforms. Its gaming performance aligns closely with that of the previous-generation RX 7900 GRE.
Performance Insights: RX 9070 GRE Compared to RTX 5070 and RX 9070
AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is powered by the RDNA 4 architecture and utilizes the same NAVI 48 die featured in the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. This model, however, comes with reduced specifications. Equipped with 3072 Stream Processors and 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, the RX 9070 GRE was designed to bridge the performance gap between the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070.
Recent publications have provided detailed evaluations of this new GPU, comparing it against a range of graphics cards from both NVIDIA and AMD, across different generations. The reviews revealed that in most scenarios, the RX 9070 GRE performs on par with the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, an RDNA 3-based GPU that was originally introduced in China before seeing a global release.

Review findings indicate that there’s minimal performance differentiation between the RX 9070 GRE and RX 7900 GRE, whether in synthetic benchmarks or real-world gaming tests. However, the RX 7900 GRE boasts an extra 4 GB of VRAM, which could be crucial for some users. Importantly, while the RX 7900 GRE debuted at a price of $549, it’s anticipated that the RX 9070 GRE will be priced below $500, given that the RX 9070 currently retails for $549.
A striking point of comparison is between the RX 9070 GRE and the RX 9070. Contrary to expectations, the RX 9070 GRE performs about 15% slower than the RX 9070, a substantial gap. Interestingly, the RTX 5070 slightly surpasses the RX 9070 GRE by only 5%.This discrepancy is notable, as the performance difference between the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 is generally around 5%, suggesting the influence of specific game titles and applications on performance metrics. Further insights can be gleaned from the comprehensive Expreview review, which showcases instances where the RX 9070 GRE nearly matches the RTX 5070, while in others, the NVIDIA card achieves up to 20% higher performance.

When analyzed alongside the RTX 5060 Ti, the RX 9070 GRE displays a performance advantage of approximately 27% (and even up to 30% in certain cases, according to Expreview), which is a notable improvement. It is essential to remember, though, that the RX 9070 GRE isn’t a direct competitor to the RTX 5060 Ti. AMD is set to unveil its RX 9060 XT at Computex, positioned to directly challenge the RTX 5060 Ti and based on a less powerful NAVI 44 die.
