XFX has officially announced that AMD’s latest RDNA 4-based professional graphics card will exclusively be available through pre-built systems, marking a strategic shift in how AMD distributes its products.
Radeon AI PRO R9700: Exclusive Availability Through Select System Builders
Unveiled during Computex, AMD’s newly launched Radeon AI PRO R9700, based on the NAVI 48 die and positioned as a professional workstation GPU, officially hit the market at the end of July. Although the Threadripper 9000 CPUs have begun appearing on various retail platforms, the Radeon AI PRO R9700 remains absent from consumer listings.
This limited accessibility arises from AMD’s decision to restrict sales to select system integrators. XFX, AMD’s board partner, has confirmed that their XFX Radeon AI PRO R9700 edition, which mirrors AMD’s reference design, will be distributed solely through these system builders. Although the GPU is technically launched, it may be a few days before it appears in listings from authorized integrators, effectively shutting out DIY consumers from purchasing this model.
Aimed primarily at AI workloads, the Radeon AI PRO R9700 presents a compelling alternative to the RX 9070 series, featuring significant enhancements such as an increased VRAM capacity. Whereas the RX 9070 XT offers 16 GB of VRAM, the R9700 is equipped with 32 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, promising superior performance for demanding tasks. However, availability exclusively through system integrators complicates the determination of its official Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).
In contrast to previous generations, AMD has opted not to sell the reference design of the R9700, limiting its availability in the DIY segment for reasons that remain unclear. Moreover, the RDNA 4 lineup may not introduce any GPUs surpassing the R9700’s capabilities, as AMD has yet to disclose plans for more potent GPU dies beyond the NAVI 48. In the prior generation, AMD provided options like the 80 and 90-class PRO GPUs, available with VRAM capacities of 32 GB and 48 GB, respectively. The R9700 competes directly with the PRO W7700 but offers double the VRAM while maintaining the same 256-bit memory bus interface.
