AMD Introduces “RX 9000” Naming Scheme for New Discrete and Laptop GPUs, Multiple Models Leaked Online

In a significant shift, AMD will bypass the anticipated RX 8000 naming scheme and launch its new RDNA 4 discrete GPUs under the RX 9000 branding, as evidenced by recent leaks and retail listings.

Confirmed Details: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070

Recent reports highlight the emergence of the AMD “RX 9070 XT,”touted as the flagship GPU in AMD’s upcoming RDNA 4 series. The confirmation comes from a retail listing along with a reliable leaker who shared insights into the new GPU names associated with the RDNA 4 architecture. This marks a strategic departure from the previously expected RX 8000 series.

The retailer Grossbill Pro lists two specific models: the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070. Both models will leverage the new Navi 48 GPU die, positioning them to compete against NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080, a powerhouse in the current graphics card market.

In addition to the RX 9070 series, insider “All The Watts!!“has hinted at further entries in the RDNA 4 lineup, including models such as the Radeon RX 9060, RX 9050, and RX 9040. This indicates that even with just two GPU dies, Navi 44 and Navi 48, a diverse range of discrete GPUs will be set to debut. There are also plans for mobile-specific GPUs like the Radeon RX 9070M XT, RX 9070M, and RX 9070S.

This decision to adopt the RX 9000 naming convention may be influenced by the forthcoming Strix Halo integrated GPUs, which will reportedly retain the RX 8000 naming approach. The graphics units within these Strix Halo APUs will feature items like RX 8060S, RX 8050S, and RX 8040S. The RX 8060S has already surfaced in various leaks and is expected to be featured in high-end APUs such as the Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395 and Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chipsets.

The Strix Halo iGPUs are set to utilize the RDNA 3.5 architecture and may provide power through as many as 40 Compute Units. Additionally, AMD plans to continue enhancing its existing RDNA lineup by introducing several new models for both desktop and mobile platforms, including:

Radeon RX 7650 series
Radeon RX 7750S
Radeon RX 7650 GRE
Radeon RX 7650M XT
Radeon RX 7650M

As the anticipation builds, more details are expected to surface ahead of the official unveiling. The RX 9000 series is slated for launch at CES 2025, coinciding with NVIDIA’s expected release of their GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell”series GPUs.
