The recent introduction of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has not only captured the attention of PC enthusiasts but has also significantly bolstered AMD’s standing in the CPU market, as reflected by data from CPU-Z.
Surge in Eight-Core CPUs: AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D Leads the Charge
The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has quickly ascended to the top of sales charts across multiple retailers, earning the title of the most popular CPU, according to the latest insights from CPU-Z. Although CPU-Z functions by collating user validation data and may not be the most robust metric for CPU popularity, it serves as a valuable alternative to shipment-based statistics.
We previously reported that AMD commanded nearly 80% of the CPU market based on March shipment numbers from Amazon US. However, this figure only offers a glimpse into a limited segment of the global CPU landscape. In contrast, CPU-Z presents a broader overview by gathering data from users around the globe. As of April 1, 2025, AMD’s market share has surged by approximately 16.6%, while Intel has seen a decline of 10%.This shift is particularly notable, as it suggests AMD is closing in on overtaking Intel for the first time.

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has been a game-changer for AMD, currently dominating sales with a 4.3% share among users. The Ryzen 5 5600X ranks second with a 2.1% share. This phenomenon has had a significant impact on core configurations, as 8-core CPUs emerged as the most popular choice, representing a 32.6% increase year-on-year.
The breakdown of CPU core configurations reveals that 8-core CPUs now constitute 24.7% of the total systems validated on CPU-Z. This is followed by 6-core CPUs at 22.5% and 4-core CPUs at 19.4%.Meanwhile, 2-core CPUs hold a 9.6% share. This trend has led to a remarkable increase in the popularity of the AM5 socket, which has risen to a 15.1% share with an impressive year-on-year growth of 144.9%.In contrast, the AM4 socket remains the most widely used, holding a 20.1% share, though it experienced an 11% decrease.

Additionally, data indicates a preference among users for budget-friendly chipsets like the B650, which offers ample features and compatibility with all AM5 processors, including the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series. Current statistics reveal a 6.4% decline in NVIDIA’s popularity while AMD has made substantial gains in the GPU sector, increasing its market share by 16.6%.Despite NVIDIA currently holding the top position, AMD has been steadily elevating its presence in the GPU market since 2021.
