AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 Introduced for ASUS ROG Ally Handhelds, Enhancing Performance Significantly

Officials from ASUS have unveiled significant performance enhancements for the ROG Ally and Ally X handheld gaming devices, thanks to the introduction of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2). Recent benchmark tests provide evidence of this impressive upgrade.

Introducing AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2: A Game Changer for ROG Ally Handhelds

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2, a sophisticated improvement over its predecessor launched in early 2024, debuted officially in October with the AMD Adrenalin 24.9.1 GPU driver. Initially, some devices did not receive the AFMF 2 at the time of its launch. However, it is now available for the ASUS ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, enhancing their gaming capabilities.

AMD has heralded a 2.5X performance increase with AFMF 2, and further improvements have already been highlighted in past reports. It’s encouraging to see measurable performance gains across both the ROG Ally and Ally X handheld systems, with recent benchmarks indicating a doubling of performance in various gaming titles.

One of the first benchmarks was presented by ASUS during a recently held YouTube livestream, where officials not only demonstrated the performance upgrade but also provided instructions on installing and utilizing the AFMF 2 on ROG Ally handhelds. Given that numerous older games lack built-in upscaling methods like FSR 3, AFMF 2 steps in to enhance gaming experiences without requiring native frame generation technology.

Although AFMF does not perform as optimally as FSR 3, it still allows users to enjoy seamless gameplay. Benchmark test results reveal that AFMF 2 significantly reduces latency while boosting frames per second (fps). Another analysis from the Quick Expert Reviews channel corroborates these findings.

Performance Benchmarks from Quick Expert Reviews

  1. Helldivers 2: Initial performance of 35-40 fps, frame time of 20-25 ms; with AFMF 2: 60-70 fps, frame time reduced to 12-15 ms
  2. Fallout 76: Original 25-40 fps, frame time between 21-45 ms; enhanced with AFMF 2: 60-100 fps, frame time improved to 10-15 ms
  3. Cyberpunk 2077: Before AFMF 2, 20-30 fps with a frame time of 22-40 ms; after installation: 50+ fps, frame time adjusted to 15-25 ms

To install AFMF 2, users can access the GPU driver update available in the Update Center on both consoles. It’s essential to ensure that the AMD driver is running actively in the background. ASUS also suggests disabling V-Sync and selecting either fullscreen or borderless fullscreen settings to fully utilize the capabilities of AFMF 2. Notably, AFMF 2 performs optimally with games that already maintain a baseline of 45+ fps, and ASUS encourages gamers to adjust settings to achieve this frame rate natively.
