AMD has officially dismissed the speculation surrounding a Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU featuring 32 GB of memory, confirming that no such variant is in development.
Clarification from Frank Azor on RX 9070 XT Specifications
The recent rumors about a 32 GB version of the RX 9070 XT were sparked by a leak from Chiphell, suggesting that this new variant would be part of AMD’s ‘Gaming’ series rather than its PRO lineup. However, AMD has put these claims to rest. Frank Azor, AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions, responded to concerns on TechPowerUp’s post on X (formerly Twitter), firmly stating:
No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity.https://t.co/SSKCrqSN7S

According to AMD, the Radeon RX 9070 XT will feature 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This decision aligns with the GPU’s capabilities, as a 32 GB version would likely not yield significant improvements for gaming applications, despite earlier assertions that it could also cater to AI tasks.
The Reasoning Behind the 16 GB Limit
Historically, AMD has not launched a gaming GPU with a memory capacity exceeding 16 GB, and it appears logical to avoid offering a 32 GB variant in the upper mid-range segment. Given that the RX 9070 XT is built on the Navi 48 architecture, it is unlikely to require or fully leverage such a large memory capacity. Other expected models, including the RX 9070 and those based on Navi 44, will have lower specifications and performance benchmarks.
Upcoming Announcements and Launch Timeline
AMD is set to unveil the RX 9000 series on February 28, providing detailed specifications, pricing, and performance metrics. Following this announcement, the retail launch is anticipated to occur in early March. Coinciding with this schedule, NVIDIA is expected to release its GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, ramping up the competition between AMD’s offerings and NVIDIA’s 70-class cards. Azor has previously indicated that the RX 70 series will directly compete against NVIDIA’s 70-class lineup, making it intriguing to see how the RX 9070 XT will perform against the upcoming RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070.
