AMD Claims RDNA 4 “Radeon RX 9070” Launch is “Unprecedented”, Discusses Dual 3D V-Cache CCDs & Next-Gen Ryzen CPUs Exceeding 16 Cores

AMD recently shared insights regarding its latest Ryzen and Radeon product launches and hinted at future developments within its expanding product lineup. The company highlighted the exceptional launch of the Radeon RX 9070 “RDNA 4″GPU, emphasizing its focus on increasing market share while also planning to target enthusiast segments down the line.

AMD’s Radeon Journey Mirrors Ryzen Success: Insights from RDNA 4 and CPU Developments

In a revealing interview with HotHardware, David McAfee (CVP & GM of AMD) provided valuable insights into both Ryzen and Radeon product positioning and future prospects.

A significant topic was the inclusion of dual 3D V-Cache CCDs in Ryzen CPUs. Since the initial success of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD has seen fruitful launches with subsequent models like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which utilize single CCD configurations. Although dual CCDs are feasible, McAfee indicated that costs play a crucial role in these design choices. Presently, a single 3D V-Cache option delivers better value across various workloads, such as gaming and content creation, particularly when considering dual CCD configurations.

While higher-end offerings like the Genoa-X do utilize multiple 3D V-Cache CCDs, these are mainly aimed at niche markets. Should demand increase for dual CCDs that include 3D V-Cache, AMD is positioned to adapt, potentially hinting at a future premium product.

“The first generation of our Ryzen 9000 is where you know, we paired together. Just like in our prior generations, with our two CCD products, one stacked and one unstacked CCD. And this is the thing that I’ve got a lot of questions about, you know, ever since we introduced the first generation of our Ryzen 9000X3D processors…”

Further discussing the core count, McAfee noted that the flagship Ryzen processors have maintained 16 cores across four generations. While this count suits current workloads, the demand for increased core counts in both gaming and content creation is evident. Future developments, including high-core-count variants for the Zen 6 architecture, are in consideration, promising to deliver a performance boost.

AMD Positions Ryzen 7 9800X3D As The Competition Against Intel's Top Core i9-14900KS Gaming CPU 1

“Yes. I think 16 cores is a great solution for today. I think we see a handful of applications that continue to push the envelope in terms of being able to take advantage of more cores…”

On the GPU front, AMD’s launch of the RDNA 4 GPUs in the Radeon RX 9070 series has garnered significant attention, outperforming rival products in early sales. However, supply chain constraints have led to increased prices as initial stock has rapidly diminished. In response, AMD is committed to enhancing the production of its Navi 48 ASICs to ensure availability for consumers.

“Priority number one is restocking all of our partners’ restocking, and by the way, we stocking our partners means all the way from retailers and making sure that they have all the components they need…”

As for AMD’s potential resurgence in the enthusiast market following the successful RDNA 4 launch, McAfee remains optimistic. By strategically cultivating relationships with game developers and enhancing product distribution, AMD aims to gradually regain its standing in the enthusiast GPU market.

Historically, while the RX 7000 series provided good value, shortcomings in software solutions and driver support limited its competitive standing against NVIDIA’s offerings. However, the current climate shows a shift, as NVIDIA faces criticism for minimal performance gains and driver issues, opening the door for AMD to capitalize on its strengths.

“Priority number one is really bad. The truth is, if you look at the market in the segmentation of the market setting aside dollars where the units reside…”

Currently, AMD is equipped with robust gaming solutions, including top-tier CPUs and competitively priced graphics cards. If they can continue their success in the GPU sector akin to their Ryzen journey, AMD stands poised to become a formidable competitor to NVIDIA in the gaming market.
