AMD has emerged as one of the initial clients for TSMC’s groundbreaking 2nm technology, and the company has decisively marked TSMC as the frontrunner in the race for advanced semiconductor processes. This assertion emphasizes TSMC’s unparalleled capabilities in the highly competitive landscape of chip manufacturing.

AMD Partners with TSMC for Next-Generation EPYC Venice CPUs Using 2nm Process

The semiconductor sector is currently witnessing an intense contest to dominate the 2nm technology space. Major players such as Intel and Samsung have made noteworthy advancements in their own cutting-edge processes, contributing to a tighter competitive atmosphere. Meanwhile, companies like NVIDIA and Apple are actively seeking secondary foundry partners; however, TSMC continues to hold a paramount position in the industry. According to remarks made by AMD’s Senior Vice President in an interview with Chosun Biz, AMD perceives TSMC’s 2nm node as the most advantageous option available.

We are developing the processor (EPYC Venice) and will officially launch it in the market next year. TSMC is the leader in the 2nm process, so we are focusing on developing and mass producing it with the highest efficiency per watt and semiconductor performance.

Recently, AMD announced that it stands as the first recipient of TSMC’s 2nm process. This significant revelation was personally shared by CEO Lisa Su during her visit to the company’s facility in Arizona. By being the first to adopt the N2 process, AMD not only highlights its importance but also signals its integration into the upcoming EPYC Venice server CPUs, which are scheduled for release next year.

In terms of data center advancements, AMD’s Senior Vice President noted that the company has registered remarkable growth, with a 57% increase in the data center segment for Q1 2025. This upward trajectory is anticipated to continue, bolstering AMD’s position. Additionally, AMD is preparing to diversify its offerings for the mid-to-low-end market with the launch of the EPYC 4005 “Grado”server CPUs, likely propelling further adoption of server technologies.

When asked about the potential for partnering with other foundries beyond TSMC, the Senior Vice President indicated that AMD is open to exploring options. They remain in discussions with various companies to ensure they can provide the best services to their customers. This suggests that while TSMC is currently AMD’s preferred partner, the company isn’t exclusively tied to one foundry; Samsung Foundry emerges as a possible alternative for future collaborations.
