AMD and OpenAI have officially forged a strategic alliance aimed at deploying 6 Gigawatts of GPUs, including the highly anticipated next-generation MI450 models, commencing in the second half of 2026.

OpenAI Teams Up with AMD for Substantial AI Infrastructure Expansion

Press Release: Today, AMD and OpenAI announced a groundbreaking agreement to enhance OpenAI’s AI infrastructure over the coming years. This collaboration will leverage multiple generations of AMD’s Instinct GPUs, beginning with an initial 1-gigawatt rollout of the cutting-edge MI450. This deployment is set to kick off in the latter half of 2026.

With AMD’s expertise in high-performance computing and OpenAI’s innovative efforts in generative AI, both companies are strategically positioned to lead during this transformative phase for artificial intelligence.

This definitive agreement designates OpenAI as a primary strategic computing partner for AMD, facilitating large-scale implementations of AMD’s technology. The partnership will start with the AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs and rack-scale AI solutions, extending into future generations of products. By collaboratively sharing technical insights, both firms aim to enhance their product line while fostering a robust partnership built on years of collaborative development, including prior generations like the MI300X and MI350X series.

As part of this agreement, AMD will grant OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, with vesting contingent on achieving specific milestones. The initial tranche will be unlocked with the first gigawatt deployment, followed by additional tranches correlating with scaling up to 6 gigawatts. Vesting is also tied to AMD meeting share price targets and OpenAI reaching necessary technical and commercial benchmarks for successful large-scale deployments.

Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s Chair and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale. This partnership maximizes the capabilities of both AMD and OpenAI, catalyzing the world’s most ambitious AI initiatives and advancing the broader AI ecosystem.”

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, underscored the significance of this partnership, noting, “This collaboration is a crucial step towards achieving the compute capacity required to unlock the full potential of AI. AMD’s expertise in high-performance chips will help accelerate our progress and make advanced AI accessible to a wider audience.”

Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, emphasized the importance of collaboration in the AI sector, saying, “The future of AI relies on deep partnerships across all layers of technology. Working alongside AMD will empower us to scale our efforts and provide AI tools that benefit people around the globe.”

Jean Hu, Executive Vice President and CFO of AMD, projected substantial financial benefits, stating, “Our partnership with OpenAI is expected to generate tens of billions in revenue for AMD and will significantly bolster OpenAI’s AI infrastructure. This strategic alignment will create immense shareholder value for both organizations and is anticipated to be highly accretive to AMD’s non-GAAP earnings-per-share.”

Through this remarkable partnership, AMD and OpenAI are dedicated to constructing the foundational infrastructure necessary to address the rapidly increasing global demand for AI. By merging unrivaled innovation with effective execution, they are poised to significantly advance the future of high-performance and AI computing.
