Recent comments from AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming, Frank Azor, have sparked interest in the capabilities of the upcoming Radeon RX 9070 “RDNA 4″GPUs. Contrary to previous performance speculation, Azor assures that these GPUs will surpass expectations.
Frank Azor Addresses Performance Concerns about AMD Radeon RX 9070 “RDNA 4″GPUs
In a strategic move, AMD has intentionally postponed the release of their RDNA 4 GPU lineup, aiming to assess the competition, particularly NVIDIA’s offerings. During an enlightening interview with PC World, Azor shared insights on how this delay aligns with their overarching launch strategy.
Azor notably disputed earlier performance rumors regarding the AMD RX 9070 XT. He clarified that reports circulating prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) concerning its capabilities were incorrect. When the interviewer probed about whether the performance was lower or higher than suggested, Azor confidently affirmed that performance would indeed be higher.
Previous leaks regarding the RX 9070 XT’s performance yielded mixed signals. One leak indicated that the card would outperform the Radeon RX 7900 GRE based on Time Spy results, while another suggested it might compete within 5% of the RTX 4080’s performance. These conflicting narratives possibly led Frank to label one or more of them as ‘inaccurate.’
It appears that the RX 9070 XT is expected to align closely with the performance of both the RX 7900 XT and RTX 4070 Ti Super, with some reports hinting at capabilities akin to the RTX 4080. Azor emphasized that the RX 9000 series GPUs will significantly enhance both rasterization and ray tracing performance, positioning the RX 9070 cards against NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti.
While Frank refrained from divulging specific details like specs and pricing, he assured that the RX 9070 XT would not exceed the $1000 threshold. This suggests that AMD is aiming to strategically align its pricing with the RTX 5070 to provide a compelling alternative in the market.
With the RTX 5070 debuting at $549, it is anticipated that the Radeon RX 9070 XT will be priced around $500. A listing for a Gigabyte RX 9070 XT Gaming OC has already surfaced online at $529 in a Philippine retailer, suggesting that the reference model may retail below $500. To effectively compete, AMD must ensure that their raster performance is either competitive or superior, given that they may lag behind NVIDIA in ray tracing capabilities.
