According to a TechJunkie inbox, an Amazon Fire Stick screen that freezes when zoomed in is a fairly common occurrence. Zoom, added as part of a range of accessibility features, enlarges part of the screen to make text clearer and larger. What should happen is that you zoom in, read the text, and then return the screen to normal size. Sometimes it doesn’t, so in this guide, we’ll discuss what to do if your Amazon Fire Stick is stuck in zoom mode.
Zooming in and out on the Amazon Fire Stick is part of the Magnifier feature introduced last year in version 188.8.131.52. With a key combination on the remote control, you can zoom in on a specific area of the displayed screen to make it larger. You turn it on and off manually and it should zoom in and then out again as soon as you repeat the key combination.
The zoom window also adds a helpful orange border to let you know you’ve zoomed in to make life a little easier.
The accessibility features added to the Amazon Fire Stick also include closed captioning, audio descriptions, VoiceView for Fire TV, and high contrast text. Closed captioning adds subtitles for the hard of hearing. Audio descriptions add a descriptive soundtrack for those with visual impairments, and VoiceView for Fire TV speaks menu options as you navigate menus. High contrast text makes all text more visible to visually impaired users. All of them aim to make the Amazon Fire Stick accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.
Amazon Fire Stick stuck on Zoom
It hasn’t happened to me yet, but after asking around, it has happened to others.
If you press “Back” and “Fast Forward” on your Amazon Fire Stick remote within five seconds, you will turn on Magnifier.
Hold the Back button and Fast Forward button again to turn it off.
Press “Menu” and “Fast Forward” to zoom in, and “Menu” and “Rewind” to zoom out. Sounds simple, right?
If none of the combinations help you scale down your Amazon Fire Stick, try one of these fixes. Obviously they work in some situations.
Alternative keyboard shortcuts
As mentioned, a combination of Menu and Fast Forward to zoom in, Menu and Rewind to zoom out, or Menu and Play to disable and enable Magnifier. If one combination doesn’t work, try another. Hold down the keys for 5-10 seconds to see if anything changes.
If you don’t need visual assistance, you can simply disable this feature in the Settings menu. It should then return your screen to normal zoom, whether you were able to unzoom or not.
- Go to Settings and Accessibility on your Amazon Fire Stick and set Magnifier to Off.
Reset your Amazon Firestick
If the above options don’t scale down your Firestick, reset it or remove it from your TV to reset it. Leave for 30 seconds and then replace it in your TV. Give it another 30 seconds to load and see if the screen returns to normal. This should bring the screen back to normal again and you can enable or disable Magnifier as you wish.
Check TV and Apps on Amazon Firestick
It sounds obvious, but several people I’ve spoken to about this issue have said they’ve tried every possible way to zoom out on their Amazon Fire Stick, only to find it’s not a Firestick at all. Some smart TVs have zoom features, just like Kodi. If you have such a TV or Kodi installed on your Firestick, it might be worth checking out.
One of the advantages will be the lack of an orange frame on the enlarged screen. Amazon Firestick adds this frame to let you know you’ve zoomed in. If there is a border, it’s your Firestick. If there is no border, then there is none.
If you have Kodi installed, it may have zoomed in and not Firestick. This is easy to check.
- Launch Kodi on your Amazon Firestick.
- Select Interface Settings and Skin .
- Make sure the scale is set to 0% in the panel on the right.
Logically speaking, if Kodi is not running on your Amazon Fire Stick, it shouldn’t cause the screen to zoom, but since the zoom feature is there and installed on the Firestick, it’s definitely worth checking out. The same goes for your smart TV if it has its own zoom feature.
Calibrate your screen
If you find that your Amazon Fire Stick keeps getting stuck in zoom, it might be worth calibrating the screen.
- Open the Settings menu on your Amazon Fire Stick.
- Now scroll and select “Display and Sounds”.
- Then click “Calibrate Display “.
- Follow the wizard to change the screen alignment and select ” Accept ” when you’re done.
This may or may not stop the Firestick from accidentally zooming in.
