The recently released reboot of Alone in the Dark retains its old-school survival horror essence, featuring numerous puzzles, secrets, and mysteries to uncover.
Like many classic survival horror games, Alone in the Dark offers players a variety of endings to discover, ranging from optimistic to more morbid outcomes. These endings can be unlocked by collecting special items known as “Lagniappes,”which serve as the game’s bonus collectibles. Some of these sets may require multiple playthroughs (with progress carrying over), and locating them can be challenging. However, fear not – we have you covered.
Please note that while this article does not delve deeply into specific details of the ending, there may be unavoidable SPOILERS mentioned below.
Finishing Touch (Emily)
To successfully complete the game, one must defeat the final boss while playing as Emily.
Alternate Ending (Edward)
Play as Edward and defeat the final boss to complete the game. This ending is essentially identical to Emily’s, but from Edward’s point of view.
Tragic Conclusion (Emily)
This conclusion depicts Emily succumbing to the control of the Dark Man. To access this ending, you must gather the “Dying with Dignity”Lagniappe collection, which includes the Sheet Music, War Photo, and Toe Tag.
- In Chapter 2’s Catacombs section, you can locate the Sheet Music in a crevice immediately after acquiring the “Sacrifice”plate and ascending to the surface.
- This war photo can only be found on the dresser in Ruth’s Room during Emily’s playthrough.
- The Toe Tag can be found on one of the covered-up corpses in the Infirmary during Emily’s playthrough, following the World War I sequence in Chapter 4.
Upon obtaining the Dying with Dignity set, while in Dr. Gray’s Apartment (the arena with traditional fixed camera angles), access the cubby where the key to the wardrobe is typically located. From there, you can interact with a specific area on the small side table in the room, allowing you to use paint thinner on the painting of Jeremy that you have been carrying with you.
Upon completing the Jeremy boss fight, performing the aforementioned actions will activate a new cutscene. As the Dark Man approaches, the cutscene will briefly pause and the sound will fade out. This particular scene is interactive, requiring the player to press the down button to lower their gun and then the right button to raise their other hand. By doing so, the player will be able to witness the ending in its entirety and unlock the “Radical Acceptance”trophy.
Unforeseen Consequences (Edward)
In this conclusion, Edward succumbs to the malevolent forces within Derceto. To access this ending, you must acquire the complete “Goat Without Horns”Lagniappe set, which includes the Preserved Reptile, Jangling Shaker, and Profane Totem.
- The Preserved Reptile can be found in the bar within the French Quarter area of Chapter 1. It is situated near Batiste’s keys, making it impossible to miss.
- In Chapter 4, unlock the Grand Parlor from the west wing hallway on the main floor and enter. After exploring, leave the Grand Parlor and proceed down the hall. When you return, you will find that the Parlor has been restored to its former grandeur. Look behind the bar to find the Jangling Shaker.
- The Profane Totem can be discovered during Edward’s special mystery sequence in Chapter 4. As you near the Pearl River Bridge, you’ll encounter a fork in the path. Take the left route and you’ll reach a ruined shack. The Profane Totem can be found inside, but only during Edward’s playthrough.
In order to obtain the Goat Without Horns set, an offering must be placed at the Whispering Tree (the large tree in the Conservatory) during Chapter 4. Depending on the sequence of events, it may not be possible to make the offering in the same playthrough as when the set is collected. In such a scenario, the ending will need to be achieved in a subsequent playthrough.
If you have successfully placed the offering, a unique cutscene will be triggered towards the end of the game, replacing the usual final boss encounter. During this scene, Emily will make an appearance and shoot Batiste, who is holding Edward captive. The following part of the cutscene requires you to hold the left button in order to focus on Grace, who is hanging from a tree. By doing so, you will be able to watch the entire cutscene and earn the “One of the Thousand Young”trophy.
Unconventional Conclusion (Grace)
This ending is unexpected and unconventional (I won’t reveal it). To access this ending, you must obtain the “All the World’s a Stage” Lagniappe set, which includes the Curious Napkin, Box of Biscuits, and Toy Talisman.
- The Curious Napkin can be discovered in Chapter 4 while playing through the Edward mystery in the French Quarter. It can be found on a side table in the hotel lobby, but only during an Edward playthrough.
- A Box of Biscuits can be located in the Infirmary during Chapter 4, after the events of World War I. To obtain it in Emily’s playthrough, first fix the circuit breaker and then search the desk in the corner.
- The last Lagniappe, the Toy Talisman, can be located on the floor near the desk in Dr. Gray’s Apartment during Chapter 4.
After completing the aforementioned steps, progress through the game until you reach the point where the final boss would typically appear. Instead of facing the boss, interact with Grace near the tree and present her with a gift. This will unlock the achievement “What Just Happened?”
And there you have it – it will require effort, but that is the way to unlock all the game’s endings (and their corresponding trophies).
Alone in the Dark is currently accessible on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
