Aloft Guide: Tips for Acquiring Animals

Aloft Guide: Tips for Acquiring Animals

In Aloft, animals are not just passive elements; they are crucial for resource acquisition and ecological restoration on islands. However, the process of acquiring these animals can be somewhat complex and unclear. This guide aims to clarify how players can effectively obtain animals in Aloft, thereby helping them combat ecological corruption.

Before embarking on the journey to collect animals, players must establish a home island where they can fly. Those who have not yet unlocked such a location should revisit this guide after completing some initial quests. Additionally, a Field Guide should be crafted beforehand. To create this item, players will need to combine one Wood, one Rope, two Leaf Cloths, and one Piece of Paper at a Workbench.

Aloft: How to Get Animals

The first step in obtaining animals in Aloft involves locating an island that meets two essential criteria:

  • The island features a healthy ecosystem or can be restored to health by the player. It’s important to note that animals cannot be collected from islands that are experiencing ecological distress.
  • The island must be home to animals that are eligible for capture. For example, players can find alpacas and sheep on the Emerald Isles.

To verify that an island meets these requirements, players should follow these steps:

  1. Land on the island in question.
  2. Equip the Field Guide and open it.
  3. Check the first page to ascertain the island’s ecosystem health. If the ecosystem is unhealthy, identify the necessary corrective actions and attempt to implement them.
  4. Next, navigate to the Animal Amount page in the Field Guide to see which specific animals inhabit the island.

With a suitable island identified, players should then search diligently for the animal they wish to capture. Locating certain animals, especially young ones, may prove challenging. Therefore, players are encouraged to listen for audio cues—the animals’ sounds can significantly help guide them to their desired companions. It’s advisable to keep the game sound enabled.

Feed the Animal, Pick It Up, and Send It Home

Once the desired animal has been found, players need to feed it a favorite food type. For both sheep and alpacas, Hay is the food of choice. Players can craft Hay at a Workbench by combining three Small Plants. To gather Small Plants, players will need a Scythe, which is crafted using one Wood, two Sharp Stones, and one Rope.

After feeding, players can pick up the animal and transport it to their home island, provided it is in close proximity. Once players return, they will find the animal freely roaming around their home island. This newly acquired companion can be cared for and its resources harvested or moved to another island to facilitate the ecological restoration process.

Aloft: Animals and Ecosystem Health

The relationship between animals and the health of an island’s ecosystem is critical and merits further explanation for those invested in this indie adventure. Each island should be populated with a specific number of animals to maintain a healthy ecosystem—this requirement is detailed on the first page of the Field Guide when players are situated on that island.

If the population threshold isn’t met, players should consider transporting animals from healthy islands to those that are struggling. However, it’s crucial to avoid over-harvesting healthy islands, as depleting them below their animal population requirement will result in an unhealthy ecosystem. Therefore, to maintain balance, only collect animals from islands with a surplus of population.
