Microsoft Excel: Monthly Feature Recap for July 2025

Once again, it’s time for Microsoft to unveil its latest advancements in Excel, showcasing the significant updates and features introduced over the past month. This summary not only highlights improvements across various platforms but also reinforces Excel’s status as a leading spreadsheet application that continues to evolve and captivate users.

New Features and Enhancements

In July 2025, Microsoft introduced a host of new functionalities in Excel with particular emphasis on Compatibility Versions. This innovative feature is designed to maintain historical calculation behaviors in existing workbooks while allowing new enhancements for users who prefer the updated calculations. Specifically, Version 1 will remain the default setting for established workbooks, but beginning January 2026, users creating new workbooks will experience Version 2 calculations by default.

Another much-anticipated update is the introduction of Auto Refresh functionality for PivotTables, now available for Insiders on both Windows and Mac platforms. This feature eliminates the need for manual data refreshes—a request frequently made by users, enhancing overall productivity. Additionally, Insiders on Windows can benefit from an improved Get Data dialog that integrates seamlessly with the OneLake catalog.

Mac and Web Enhancements

Excel for Mac has integrated a productivity feature that allows users to open multiple sheets, workbooks, and panes side-by-side. This addition enhances the user experience by facilitating easier comparisons, and it includes synchronous scrolling for added convenience.

Excel for the web also saw notable enhancements, including the ability to refresh external data sources using Power Query. Previously, users had to download files and open them on a desktop version to initiate a refresh. Additionally, enterprise customers now benefit from the capability to directly request elevated privileges for files within Excel for the web, streamlining workflow and enhancing collaborative efforts.

These continuous improvements highlight Microsoft’s commitment to refining Excel and catering to the evolving needs of its user base, ensuring it remains a top choice in the realm of spreadsheet tools.
