AI makes writing formulas in Microsoft Excel easier than ever

Mastering the art of writing formulas in Microsoft Excel can be a daunting task, even for seasoned professionals. Crafting the correct syntax, selecting appropriate functions, and accurately referencing cells requires attention to detail and expertise. Many users often find themselves scouring the internet for examples, trying to troubleshoot their errors.

To address these challenges, Microsoft is unveiling an innovative feature within Excel known as formula completion. Leveraging advanced AI technologies, this new Copilot functionality simplifies the formula creation process by automatically suggesting and completing formulas when users begin typing with an equals sign (“=”).

How Formula Completion Works

The formula completion feature is designed to streamline the process of entering formulas by providing intelligent suggestions and real-time updates:

  • Formula Suggestions: As users type “=”, Copilot assesses the workbook’s context—taking into account headers, nearby cells, existing formulas, and tables—to propose relevant formula suggestions. In addition, it previews potential results alongside a brief explanation of the formula’s purpose.
  • Dynamic Auto-Completion: When users input more characters after the equals sign, Copilot continuously refines its suggestions until it identifies a suitable match.

At present, the formula completion feature does not support formulas that reference data from other worksheets, but Microsoft anticipates adding this functionality with future updates. To maximize the benefits of this tool, consider the following tips:

  1. If you type “=” and see no immediate suggestions, be patient—Copilot may require a moment to generate them. During this time, a progress indicator will appear at the lower border of the cell.
  2. Formula completion is most effective when there are well-defined labels or headers to provide clarity on the context. Enhance your sheet by including descriptive labels in the header or surrounding cells.
  3. If you are having difficulty locating the correct formula, try enhancing the context by adding further details in nearby cells or headers.
  4. If typing “=” does not yield expected results, continue entering additional characters. Formula completion will adjust its suggestions according to your input.

This exciting formula completion feature is currently being rolled out for Copilot users in Excel for the web, with availability limited to US-English. It is also expected to expand to Excel Desktop and support other languages in future updates.
