Ahn Sung-jae Opens Up About Work Dynamic with Baek Jong-won on Culinary Class Wars, Discusses Season 2 Comeback

On October 21, 2024, South Korean news platform News1 reported that Chef Ahn Sung-jae recently shared insights regarding his professional interactions with fellow judge Baek Jong-won during their stint on Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars. During an interview with JTBC’s Newsroom, broadcasted on October 20, Chef Ahn candidly acknowledged that he and Baek often had conflicting views.

He characterized their partnership as challenging but realized that their contrasting viewpoints provided a more comprehensive judging experience. When questioned about their working relationship, Ahn Sung-jae remarked,

“We didn’t see eye to eye very often. However, this was beneficial because we could evaluate the competition from distinct angles. Baek possesses remarkable skills, and working through our differences led to mutual respect. Nonetheless, if we cross paths again, I will stand firm in my beliefs.”

Despite Baek Jong-won’s friendly demeanor and their shared respect, Chef Ahn emphasized that he would continue to advocate for his views in any future collaborative efforts.

Reflecting on his judging experience, Chef Ahn Sung-jae further elaborated on his approach to the role, stating that his background and skills allowed him to serve as an equitable judge within the competition.

Chef Ahn Sung-jae talks about the possibility of returning for the second season of Culinary Class Wars

Following the show’s remarkable success worldwide, Netflix has confirmed the return of Culinary Class Wars for a second season. On October 15, 2024, the streaming service publicized the revival of the acclaimed South Korean cooking competition, which notably became the first Korean unscripted program to achieve the top position on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV list during its run.

Regarding his possible involvement in the second season of Culinary Class Wars, Chef Ahn Sung-jae carefully hinted that discussions were in progress. He mentioned that while they had explored the idea, further dialogue was required before making any definitive choices.

“They’ve brought it up to me, but we still need more talks,”he mentioned.

Chef Ahn expressed surprise at some of the exceptional culinary techniques showcased on the show, particularly highlighting contestant Chef Jeong Ji-seon’s impressive approach to preparing shiitake mushrooms in one of her dishes. When asked about the chefs he has guided, including those with Triple Star status, Ahn clarified that he does not view them as “students.”Instead, he feels immense pride in their growth, which has even moved him to tears on occasion.

In response to inquiries about his reaction to Chef Choi Hyun-seok’s elimination, Chef Ahn Sung-jae clarified that his expressions were related to the complexity of Choi’s dish rather than excitement over his exit. He underlined that his attention was focused on the dish’s ingredients, such as lamb and tofu, which he found surprisingly sophisticated.

According to the announcement from Netflix’s official site, season 2 is anticipated to premiere in the latter half of next year, promising even more intense culinary confrontations and raised stakes for both the contestants and the audience.
