It’s undeniable that the majority of TTRPG enthusiasts also indulge in video games. Nevertheless, statistics reveal that a mere fraction of the expansive gaming population explores tabletop RPGs. At the time of Cyberpunk 2077’s 2020 release, multiple cyberpunk-themed tabletop RPGs had already entered the market, with new titles like Cities Without Number gaining traction year after year. The addition of a free quick-start PDF nearly four years after launch—especially following the considerable buzz surrounding its initial release—could have sparked a greater interest in TTRPGs. It’s unfortunate that this moment did not catalyze a more extensive shift toward cultivating new tabletop players.
The appeal of the cyberpunk genre serves as an ideal gateway for introducing newcomers to the TTRPG landscape. My appreciation for classics like William Gibson’s Neuromancer fostered my desire to play role-playing games like Shadowrun and R. Talsorian’s Cyberpunk TTRPG.
