ADOR Files Injunction Against NewJeans Amid Contract Dispute

In a significant legal move, ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE, has initiated an injunction to forbid the members of the girl group NewJeans from independently entering into advertising contracts. This decision comes during an ongoing contractual dispute between the label and the popular K-pop group.

According to a statement released by ADOR, the appeal has been filed with the Seoul Central District Court, seeking to maintain their agency status and prevent NewJeans members from signing external advertising deals. This development was reported by TenAsia.

The Reasons Behind the Injunction

In their official communication on January 13, ADOR indicated that the “confirmation of exclusive contract validity”lawsuit, which was lodged by the label in December of the previous year, could be a lengthy process. They have therefore sought this injunction to swiftly address the existing chaos surrounding the group’s contractual obligations.

ADOR emphasized that if NewJeans members proceed to engage independent advertisers, it could create substantial confusion among sponsors who have previously aligned with the group under the agency’s guidance. The label reiterated that the injunction reflects their commitment to maintaining an exclusive contract with NewJeans.

Support for NewJeans’ Ongoing Activities

In their remarks, ADOR confirmed their unwavering support for NewJeans, stating, “We have consistently supported NewJeans’ entertainment activities with all necessary personnel and facilities and plan to continue doing so.” This was in direct response to the group’s unilateral announcement in November regarding their intent to terminate the exclusive contract.

The five members of NewJeans—Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—have been pursuing independent advertising contracts, which has raised concerns about potential repercussions from major industry organizations, including the Korean Producers Association and the Korea Music Content Association.

Visa Issues Complicate the Situation

With the turmoil surrounding their contracts, additional complications have arisen. Hanni, the Vietnamese-Australian member of NewJeans, is facing challenges as her South Korean visa, issued for her role in the entertainment industry under ADOR, has expired. This situation underscores the potential difficulties that could arise as the group persists in their efforts to dissolve their contractual ties.

Despite the ongoing dispute and Hanni’s visa predicament, ADOR remains steadfast in its position that the exclusive contract with NewJeans is valid. The agency has also expressed its ambition to continue the group’s activities, including forthcoming music releases and concert schedules.
