Exciting Developments for Pennywise in “It: Welcome to Derry”

  • Bill Skarsgård is set to reprise his iconic role as Pennywise in the upcoming prequel, “It: Welcome to Derry.”
  • The new series delves into Pennywise’s backstory, taking viewers back to the year 1962.

Following the monumental success of Stephen King’s adaptations of It, HBO Max is gearing up for a thrilling prequel series titled It: Welcome to Derry. Bill Skarsgård, who brings to life the terrifying character of Pennywise, recently shared intriguing insights about the project, which is officially set 27 years before the chilling events depicted in the celebrated films.

In a recent conversation with SFX Magazine, Skarsgård expressed his enthusiasm about reconnecting with the character:

“I don’t know why, but Pennywise is very accessible for me. So in terms of getting back into it, it was just like ‘Da da dah!’, and he explodes out. He’s so defined, he’s sort of dormant but very easily activated.”

The actor added layers to his insights, indicating that the series will explore aspects of Pennywise that previous films didn’t cover. He noted, “We explored things that we haven’t explored in the movies – particularly one side of it, which I can’t go into. I hope the fans are excited.”

Set against the backdrop of 1962, It: Welcome to Derry promises to unveil previously unseen elements of Pennywise’s terrifying persona. Fans can anticipate a deeper understanding of what makes this character so memorable and formidable.

Skarsgård is no stranger to fear-inducing roles, having appeared in notable projects such as Villains, Barbarian, and as the voice of Kro in Eternals. His portrayal of Pennywise carries a unique spirit that resonates deeply with audiences, even he admits to encountering nightmares related to the character. In another interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed some of his unsettling dreams as he navigated Pennywise’s frightening world.

Interestingly, when the prequel was first announced, Skarsgård was not initially attached to the project. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, he appreciated how abstract and unique the character of Pennywise is, suggesting that if another actor were to step into the role, they should embrace their interpretation of it. Nevertheless, Skarsgård’s distinctive ability to convey terror will undoubtedly enrich It: Welcome to Derry.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is scheduled to premiere in 2025. This forthcoming year is shaping up to be particularly exciting for Stephen King enthusiasts, with other adaptations like Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey also on the horizon.
