Each year, Activision captivates gamers worldwide with the release of its highly anticipated Call of Duty title. The latest installment, Black Ops 6, has quickly ascended to become the franchise’s most popular entry to date. However, one persistent challenge remains for the company: combating cheating within the game.
RICOCHET: A Promising Yet Challenging Anti-Cheat Solution
Activision introduced its kernel-level anti-cheat program, RICOCHET, which boasts advanced detection methods and artificial intelligence aimed at eliminating cheaters. While RICOCHET showed promising results at launch, a significant resurgence of cheating was noted by the onset of ranked play in Black Ops 6’s first season.
“We understand the promise of glory and notoriety from Ranked Play leaderboards makes Ranked Play an attractive target for cheaters,” stated the anti-cheat team in a blog post. “For this reason, our teams have been especially focused on turning the tide to deliver the competitive arena our players seek.”
Recent Adjustments to the Anti-Cheat System
In response to these challenges, Activision has implemented several changes to enhance its anti-cheat measures:
- Enhanced Account Management: Account bans are now being executed on an hourly basis, thanks to accelerated procedures from various RICOCHET systems. Recently, over 19,000 accounts have been banned, signaling a quicker enforcement response time than ever before.
- Improved Leaderboard Efficiency: The process for synchronizing leaderboard updates has been optimized, facilitating faster corrections and cleanups.
- Expanded Investigative Capabilities: The Replay Investigation system has been significantly bolstered. This includes an increase in the number of machines dedicated to generating evidence clips and amplifying the team that reviews these clips. Recent updates have proven effective in confirming detections and enhancing AI training, thereby strengthening the anti-cheat framework.
Looking Ahead: Future Developments
As the season progresses, the Black Ops 6 anti-cheat team anticipates a substantial overhaul of RICOCHET’s kernel-mode driver and server-side detection methods, along with other protective features.
“The RICOCHET Anti-Cheat team will be continuing its work to fight cheaters throughout the remainder of the month,” the team’s message emphasized. “While we have made progress, we know more needs to be done and we’re eager to share details of our planned major updates coming in the new year.”
Additional Security Recommendations
The anti-cheat team also advises players to enable two-factor authentication on their accounts. This additional layer of security can effectively prevent phishing attempts related to account theft and cheating.
