As the investigation by Naoe and Yasuke into the enigmatic Shinbakufu member known as The Wheel reaches its climax, a startling discovery on a remote island in the northern expanse of Lake Biwa raises significant concerns: Lady Oichi, who was once thought to be Yasuke’s ally and romantic interest, is revealed to be the very individual they have been pursuing.
But was this revelation truly unexpected? Were you able to detect the subtle clues along the way?
Perhaps it was the foreboding music that underscored Yasuke and Oichi’s encounter at the Godai Tenshu, or the poignant connection between her turmoil—having lost both her husband and brother to violence—and the tear-streaked mask worn by this member of the nefarious Shinbakufu.
Ultimately, you face a significant decision: Will you spare Lady Oichi while playing as Yasuke, or will you attack her as Naoe, seeking retribution for her father’s death?
Navigating to the Wheel in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Your journey begins at Shiotsu Shrine, located on the northern shores of Lake Biwa, where Yasuke and Naoe convene. Each character has distinct roles; Yasuke is tasked with locating The Wheel/Mourner’s vessel in the port area.
Approach the marked location and engage with the port official, defeating the guards to extract vital information. This will direct Naoe and Yasuke to the island in northern Lake Biwa for their next move that evening.
Now, your mission is clear: eliminate The Wheel. After disembarking from your boat, discover an underwater tunnel within the adjacent cave that leads to a cenote, taking you directly to your destination.
Cruise through the island’s foliage toward the viewpoint, then peer into the structure adjacent to the viewpoint pagoda rather than the tower itself.
Inside, Lady Oichi is unexpectedly unveiled as the Mourner/Wheel. Following an intense cutscene, you will be faced with the critical choice of whether to spare her as Yasuke or to attack as Naoe.
Evaluate: Spare or Attack Lady Oichi?
If you opt to spare her as Yasuke, you can anticipate the following outcomes:
- No casualties occur, bringing the quest to a peaceful conclusion, allowing you to pursue your next target within the Shinbakufu.
- Naoe may express disappointment, yet ultimately respects Yasuke’s choice and comes to terms with it.
- Oichi departs with Kuma to atone for her actions, pledging to assist you against the Shinbakufu, thus initiating a new quest titled The Wheel Turns, which deepens the romantic storyline between Yasuke and Oichi.
- In a significant gesture, Oichi presents Yasuke with Oda Nobunaga’s legendary katana, known for its power.
- You also unlock an additional quest titled Cloud Gazing, enhancing the friendship dynamics between Naoe and Yasuke by the shores of Lake Biwa.
- The final Corrupt Daikan, labeled The Hoarder, is unveiled to you in Kyoto.
In contrast, if you choose to attack as Naoe, you will find:
- Oichi’s bodyguard, Kuma, intervenes and absorbs the blow intended for Oichi, prompting Yasuke to step in and quell the conflict.
- The participants emerge from the encounter unscathed, with the results reflecting those from the sparing choice.
- Exclusive dialogue emerges where Naoe queries whether Yasuke is upset with her, with the remainder of the dialogue following a similar path to the sparing option.
- You still receive both quests, Cloud Gazing and The Wheel Turns, while also uncovering the identity of The Hoarder and acquiring the katana.
Thus, despite this scenario being portrayed as a binary decision, it represents more of an illusion of choice, as every character is fated to survive the encounter, regardless of your decision.
This means the choice you make should resonate with your unique gameplay experience and how you envision the trajectories of the characters involved.
Will you depict Naoe as driven by a thirst for vengeance, or will she ultimately lean towards the ideals of peace and justice championed by Yasuke and Yaya? Is Yasuke’s affection for Oichi sufficiently developed for him to demonstrate mercy?
Although the end result remains largely consistent, you still have the opportunity to shape the narrative experience according to your preferences, influencing how you navigate future interactions with the Shinbakufu and make later decisions in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
