Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for Abbott Elementary season 4, episode 11 (“Strike”). In the latest developments of Abbott Elementary season 4, Gregory (played by Tyler James Williams) is experiencing a significant shift in his social life, a dynamic that has been absent since season 2. Matthew Law’s character, O’Shon, made his debut in episode 3 (“Class Pet”) as an IT representative from the district. From the onset, O’Shon showed interest in Ava (Janelle James), the principal, who remains indecisive about pursuing a relationship. However, O’Shon’s role takes on new importance as he emerges as a crucial friend to Gregory, who has been largely isolated within the school.
O’Shon’s Impact on Gregory’s Friendship Circle
In episode 11 of season 4 (“Strike”), O’Shon returns to help facilitate a transition to hybrid learning. During his visit, he notices Gregory casually tossing paper into the trash and extends an invitation for Gregory to join a pickup basketball game. While Gregory’s acceptance appears laid-back, it’s evident that he is eager about the opportunity to make a new friend. This moment is a cause for celebration among his students and girlfriend Janine (Quinta Brunson), even as Gregory insists he has other relationships outside the school environment. However, the last notable acknowledgment of this was an ill-fated romance from two seasons ago involving a character that initially interrupted the budding relationship between Gregory and Janine.
The Complicated History with Janine and Maurice

Before their relationship blossomed, Janine’s past with Maurice (played by Vince Staples) was tumultuous. Initially, Maurice was a close friend to Gregory, even persuading him to partake in a boys’ night in episode 10 of season 2, titled “Holiday Hookah.” Although Gregory was in a relationship at the time, a flirtation sparked between him and Janine. Following Gregory’s exit from the scene, Maurice seized the opportunity to date Janine, despite their evident incompatibility. Janine’s decision to go on a date with Maurice initiated a series of complications for both her and Gregory.
In season 2, episode 16 (“Teacher Conference”), Janine and Gregory share their first kiss, resulting in her feeling conflicted. After attempting to inform Maurice of her feelings, Maurice’s negative reaction left Janine questioning her choices and dissuaded her from pursuing a relationship with Gregory, particularly evident during the season finale. Since then, Gregory’s interactions have primarily revolved around his professional relationships and family dynamics, often leaving him without personal connections outside of his immediate circle.
Significance of O’Shon and Gregory’s Friendship in Season 4
Potential for Independent Storylines

With O’Shon solidifying his friendship with Gregory, the possibilities for both characters expand significantly. Gregory has often played a secondary role in stories involving other characters, primarily featuring in plotlines with Janine or Jacob. Developing friendships outside of the workplace could allow Gregory to embark on individual story arcs that showcase his character growth. This fresh layer offers new potential, paving the way for Gregory to have narratives independent of existing romantic contexts.
Simultaneously, Ava and O’Shon could emerge as new central figures in future storylines, akin to the dynamic seen with Janine and Gregory. However, there’s no affirmation that their romantic connection will endure. In a contrasting twist of fate compared to Maurice, should O’Shon’s potential relationship falter, he will still maintain his friendship with Gregory, establishing a stability that transcends their romantic endeavors. The blossoming friendship not only enriches their narrative but also ensures they retain their individuality amidst evolving relationships, making O’Shon’s bond with Gregory one of the most heartwarming developments in Abbott Elementary season 4.
