Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for Abbott Elementary season 4, episode 10, “Testing.”
The slow-burning romance between Janine Teagues and Gregory Eddie is undeniably one of Abbott Elementary‘s most captivating narratives. However, an emerging relationship may soon take center stage and even surpass their connection. Quinta Brunson portrays the headstrong Janine, while Tyler James Williams plays the equally charming Gregory. Their chemistry has been palpable since the beginning, but external circumstances often kept them apart. Initially, Janine found herself in a relationship, and later, Gregory pursued someone else. This dynamic led to the frustrating yet enticing scenario of “right person, wrong timing.”Despite the odds, many viewers felt it was inevitable that they would eventually unite.
An Evolution: Janine and Gregory’s Dynamic
Season 3 ultimately broke the cycle of uncertainty, as Janine and Gregory finally became a couple. However, as Abbott Elementary dives deeper into its fourth season, the narrative signals a crucial transformation. Their relationship, while enchanting, suggests it’s time for what’s next. With the series being ABC’s least-viewed scripted program, it has done well in reinventing itself. Maintaining tension and excitement between Janine and Gregory could quickly become monotonous, as numerous plot conflicts have already been explored. Thus, the series appears poised to focus on Ava Coleman (played by Janelle James) as the unexpected new romantic lead.
Ava & O’Shon: The New Romantic Focus
The Origin: Ava Meets O’Shon

Ava’s first interaction with O’Shon (Matthew Law), the district IT representative, occurs in season 4, episode 3. After Abbott Elementary receives new computers as a part of a bribe from the golf course, the school staff decides to devise a scheme to convince the IT representative that the computers are outdated, preventing their removal. Amidst the staff’s antics, O’Shon catches the eye of everyone, particularly Ava, although she remains oblivious to his interest. O’Shon’s willingness to keep the school’s secret leads him to offer Ava his contact information. Notably, in a scene reminiscent of She’s All That, Ava dons glasses and suddenly recognizes his attractiveness, adding a playful twist to their budding connection.
Since that initial meeting, returning episodes have showcased O’Shon subtly flirting with Ava, yet she has remained uncertain about how to respond. After a collaborative effort to save the winter show in season 4, episode 7, O’Shon amplifies his advances in episode 10, intensifying the tension between them.
A Potential Slow-Burn Romance: Ava and O’Shon
Ava’s First Real Romantic Venture

As Ava continues to grow as a character, her evolving relationship with O’Shon serves as an essential part of her development. Despite her claims of O’Shon being “broke,” he clearly appreciates her unique persona and isn’t intimidated by her robust nature. One significant aspect of their dynamic is O’Shon’s ability to stand his ground against Ava, something relatively rare given her forceful personality.
Season 4 of Abbott Elementary has opened the door for several Ava-focused storylines, creating ample opportunities for her to explore her feelings for O’Shon. By allowing Ava to face personal issues, such as her father’s return or the school’s struggle with the golf course, the show paves the way for a meaningful connection that isn’t rushed. This gradual exploration promises to yield a more profound and lasting relationship, ensuring that when Ava finally acts on her feelings, her past reservations may no longer matter.
The Potential Superiority of Ava & O’Shon Over Janine & Gregory
Established Character Dynamics

Ava and O’Shon represent a fresh narrative shift as Janine and Gregory’s previous will-they-won’t-they dynamic loses its initial charm. Unlike the early attraction between Janine and Gregory, which was introduced in season 1 and ingrained into their character arcs, Ava’s character was developed independently before O’Shon’s arrival. O’Shon, while still evolving, has the potential to foster deeper growth within Ava’s character.
Actor | Abbott Elementary Character |
---|---|
Brunson Farm | Janine Teagues |
Tyler James Williams | Gregory Eddie |
Chris Perfect | Jacob Hill |
Sheryl Lee Ralph | Barbara Howard |
Lisa Ann Walter | Melissa Schemmenti |
Janelle James | Ava Coleman |
William Stanford Davis | Mr. Johnson |
In contrast to Janine and Gregory, where their romantic inclinations are tightly woven into their identities, Ava remains a formidable individual in her own right. Any romantic involvement will complement but not define her character. While O’Shon has room to develop, he lays a promising foundation as Ava’s potential partner in Abbott Elementary season 4.
